Well I've been reading his stuff a few years, never disappoints, very dark thriller in the land of ice and snow! Nesbo, reminds me a lot of James Lee Burke. A lot. The Leopard, another very dark twisted thriller that is very satisfying especially with character development. I am always afraid he is going to kill off, in a dreadful way, characters I really like... And he does! And the innocent suffer horribly but the innocent victim always does, and i like that this author does not gloss over that life fact. He has a sixth sense for finding the evil and bringing light to that darkness before destroying it, but it seems at a really horrible price to Hole, the main character, who is I like to think in sound in English is, Holy. And I like that name for all of the symbolic like gestures. Harry is the archetypal redeemer type character; scapegoat, personal suffering, righteous ( in the selfish sense of a obsessed detective) and angst that anyone in this world enjoys experiencing vicariously in a good read.
There is a huge 'hole' in the psyche of his main character Harry Hole. Alcoholism and addiction aside, and they are part and parcel of the package, he is an obsessive compulsive, depressive, with all the self destructive, relationship ripping aspects that make him a one man wrecking crew. Redemption is found in a few people around him who, truly are good souls, trying to help him embrace his own true goodness or having been really scorched through association, keep a whiny like distance for self preservation.
Hole remains on the same destructive course, in the new story, a good life course for finding justice for the victims of insane, evil people. I just hope Harry finds some peace, but really I am confident if he does Nesbo, will jerk that out from under him in a cruel way! So brutal it is just embracing! This author never let's up on the gasp! Ya, the 'Gasp' aspect of a read where you have to stop yourself from reading ahead or at the worst reading the end!
So, if you do not have the time to really let yourself become immersed in Harry Hole's story, or are looking for a simple drama best read a slick pick read from something fluffy and predictable; this author will be too much for you. Me, I am just unable to put it down, I like to be sucked in and held hostage by a really Good Read!
