本书讨论的主题是“爱”，这一人类最崇高的情感。作者指出了当时（二十世纪五十年代）西方社会普遍存在的对“爱”的误解和偏见，并提出了只有主动地发展、健全自己的人格，达到可以丰富自己和他人生命的程度，才有能力去爱。书中提到了现代文明对于人的异化，为了抵抗这种异化，作者认为最有效的方法就是创造，而不是一味地消费。作者主张人们要向自己的内心寻求力量，消费品是无法让人得到灵魂的救赎的。这本书让我感触颇深，最大的启示莫过于如何爱自己的孩子这一点。作者指出，如果父亲或母亲自己没有形成健全的人格，没有爱人的能力，是无法培养出积极向上的孩子的。读到这里我恍然大悟，原来已过而立之年的我还是没有做好要孩子的准备，正是因为自己内心的脆弱以及爱的能力的缺失。幸好在要孩子之前意识到了了这个问题。希望可以在不远的将来，可以培养好自己爱的能力。

无意中看到这本书，颇受启发。
首先这本书可以作为我之前读《少有人走的路》的补充，甚至制衡
其次，我买了一本中文书，发现中文的翻译很差，意思生硬，比如focus翻译成“集中”，明显用“专注”更好，其次有翻译错误。
拿到这本书，看后封面的文字，发现中英文标点符号混合使用，瞬间就对这本书的翻译质量彻底失去了信心，翻译都是细活啊，还是能读英文书好。
