It's hard to find the time right now to read, but what I've read so far has been very interesting and informative, it has absolutely kept my attention.
Out of all the books similar to this genre this is the only one I've come across that is not a clone - those other books seem to follow a somewhat encyclopedic format, and repeat the same sequence of history, the same quotes, the same opinions and theories and criticisms. Then next thing you know, you're pushing yourself to finish that book in the hope of finding a nugget of new insight into Jane Austen.
Malcolm Day's book captures you and pulls you in to that time period - you find a quiet place and let yourself get enfolded in the book, and next thing you know, someone's asking for dinner and you're stunned that you're sitting on your patio and it's a couple hours later. Probably having seen the movies and read Jane's books helps put visuals to the telling.
I bought this book to use as research for a grad paper, but it was so great, I had to keep it. It covers all aspects of what life would have been like for a young woman of Austen's social class and upbringing. It also has some biographical details about her life and family. The book includes many drawings, paintings etc. which help illustrate the aspects of life in Georgian England. For all who worship at the altar of "All things Jane Austen," this is a must-read.
A very well written historic account of the times of Jane Austen. Given as a gift and the recipient thoroughly enjoyed it.
This book gives the reader a great amount of information about the time period in an extremely "readable" way-very interesting and entertaining!
