Ladies and Gentlemen: In this moon-lit evening, we, Chinese and American scholars, are gathered here to review the history of Sino-US contacts in a number of fields and look into the future of further cooperation and exchange between our two countries.//
More than thirty years ago, as an important step in Sino-US relations, President Nixon visited China when the two countries did not even have diplomatic relations.//
All supporters for closer China-US relations were filled with delight and excitement by the political courage / insight our leaders displayed. Of course, China-US relations have not always been smooth(sailing).//
Passage 2:

In recent years, China has seen a surge of English-learning waves. Many people believe that the command of English means the command of Knowledge as well as the command of future.//
However, for most students at home, they learn English first to pass the examinations, written examinations that cover only reading and writing. This makes people always associate English with the memorizing of words and analyzing of grammar, which in turn spoils people’s interest in learning English.//
The result is that many Chinese students who scored high in written English tests could not communicate fluently with foreigners: I cannot understand what other people say, nor can I make myself understood.//
Now, the common consensus is that the key to learning English is not genus but diligence. If you can spend 5 to 6 hours a day reading and practicing English, you will certainly dig a lot out of it.
