Passage 1:
It is clear that we all need to sleep. There are two purposes: physical rest and emotional, or psychological, rest. We need to rest our bodies and our minds. Both are important for us in order to be healthy.//
Each night we alternate between two kinds of sleep: active sleep and passive sleep; passive sleep gives our body the rest that is needed, and prepares us for active sleep, in which dreaming occurs.//
Throughout the night, the brain rests, then it becomes active, then dreaming occurs. This cycle is repeated several times, and we dream for a total of one and a half hours, on the average.//
We all experience these dream cycles; no one is an exception. Everyone needs to dream in order to stay healthy. We need active sleep in order to dream and dreaming helps us to rest our minds.
Passage 2 is about whether more money can make people feel happier.
Passage 2:
In our American society of market economy, everybody talks about making-money. Does money mean everything? Can money buy happiness? Oh, No! //
But would a little more money make us a little happier? Many of us would smile and nod. There is, we believe, some connection between financial fitness and feeling fantastic.//
Most of us would say that, yes, we would like to be rich. Two thirds of American college students now consider it “very important” that they become “very well off.”//
Well, are rich people happier? Researchers have found that in poor countries, being relatively well off does make people feel happier. But in rich countries where nearly everyone can afford life’s necessities, increasing wealth matters surprisingly little.//
