Dreadnought: Britain, Germany and the Coming of the Great War

From colonial disputes, secret treaties with former foes, high-wire diplomacy, and tit-for-tat building of the terrifyingly powerful dreadnought battleships. DREADNOUGHT is a dramatic re-creation of the diplomatic and military brinkmanship that preceded, and made inevitable, the outbreak of the first world war.

Massie brings to vivid life such historical figures as the single-minded Admiral von Tirpitz, the young, ambitious, Winston Churchill, the ruthless, sycophantic Chancellor Bernhard von Bulow, and many others. The relationship between Queen Victoria and Kaiser Wilhelm is particularly intriguing. Wilhelm's admiration, and even envy, for everything British, was to play an important part in the events to come. Their story, and the story of the era, filled with misunderstandings, missed opportunities, and events leading to unintended conclusions, unfolds like a Greek tragedy in his powerful narrative. Intimately human and dramatic, DREADNOUGHT is history at its most riveting.

Dreadnought is a "must read" for those even mildly interested in the events which ultimately led to the outbreak of World War I. Despite its length, it is expertly written and very hard to put down. Personally, one incentive for my reading this book comes from my longstanding interest in the USS Texas which is the last remaining dreadnought battleship that exists worldwide and which is moored locally as a museum piece along the Houston ship Channel in La Porte, Texas.

True to his eloquent, clear and comprehensive style, Mr. Massie dissects the events leading to WWI, slowly builds up the tempo and guides the reader into the final tragic climax without ever losing site of the big picture or getting lost in the webs of small details.
Although I am not a historian, I felt that Mr. Massie presented the facts with as much neutrality as hindsight allows, and that was one of the many appeals of this book. His prose was colorful enough to make reading a history book enjoyable even for the non-historians.
Truly a masterpiece.

I purchased the book and actually thought that it was a history of the British navy. Actually what to is is a history of the interaction of the British and Prussian/German royal families (spoiler alert - over the time frame of the book they were quite close by marriage) and how those interactions as well the actions of the ruling class of Prussia developed prior to WW I.

The book covers not only the interactions of the families but also the intrigue between the great powers that eventually lead up to and drug much of Europe into war without the benefit of finding another way to solve the issues.

If your an avid history buff and want to understand the underlying causes of WW I, much of the intrigue that set the stage for WW II and, eventually, what drives the world today this is a good read.
