Jurgen Muller studied art history in Bochum, Paris, Pisa, and Amsterdam. He has worked as an art critic, a curator of numerous exhibitions, a visiting professor at various universities, and has published books and numerous articles on cinema and art history. Currently he holds the chair for art history at the University of Dresden, where he lives. Muller is the series editor for TASCHEN's Movies decade titles.

Pick a decade from the 1920's until the present and you'll find lovely b/w and color stills and commentary about many of the best-loved films from each of those decades in this hefty two-volume boxed set. Although some might consider this set to be merely a "coffee table" set, you had better have a sturdy coffee table to hold it. Plus, unlike many books of that description, these volumes are ones that you will actually want to spend time reading and enjoying, rather than simply looking through them once and placing on the table for shelf for mere display.
One oddity you might notice is that the stills from "Raging Bull" are in color, even though everyone will remember the film as being shot in black and white. Although the majority of the films featured are from America, the books do include some films from Europe and Japan.
This publisher has already published books covering the Best Movies of the 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, and 90s. It appears that the vast majority of the material in this two-volume set was taken directly from those previously published books. However, those older books are becoming more and more difficult to obtain and if you are simply interested in obtaining a book dealing with 100 films, rather than the many more contained within all of those previous volumes, this set should suffice.

I must admit I was expecting much more from Taschen's 2-book set (2008). This publisher has already published books covering the Best Movies of the 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, and 90s (and even more). The vast majority of the material was taken directly from those previously published books. 100 All-Time Favorite Movies comes with two volumes: 1915-1959 and 1960-2000. The 100 films selected aren't bad (I would admit most are worth seeing), the packaging is impressive but the pictures and writing are not. Both volumes were starting to crack and fall apart after reading only 25 pages or so.
Each decade gets an introduction by Muller but he doesn't capture the magic of every era. His biases, political commentary, racial and social comments, and film student analysis overpowers the text. For 100 of his favorite films some of the comments are surprising. Some of the films he describes as kitschy, cheesy and overrated. Almost every single comment he makes reduces to visual perception, the eye, the cinema of surfaces, illusions, etc. Muller is interested in movies as art but rarely considers storytelling or entertainment value. His coverage of the 1950's is probably the best. His essay on the 1980's is pedestrian and lacking in substance as he reduces the decade of excess to mere illusions. The 1990's discusses the history of home video but it is equally light in detailed analysis. There is only a paragraph or two for each film, surrounded by pictures and captions, plus a listing of the credits. I see there is only one other review for this collection and I'm not surprised because some of the pictures included are blurry. The book is mostly pictures with some essays from Muller but the content is very light overall. The pictures are a mixed bag because some are high-quality but not all. It is a decent-sized collection but the meat isn't there and the pictures just aren't up to snuff for a book that relies on its visuals. It doesn't quite work as a coffee-table book nor is the text particularly insightful. At the right price this Taschen guide is OK. If you can find it in a bargain bin for $10 it would be a good deal.
