What We Talk About When We Talk About Love / Beginners (A Vintage Short)

A Vintage Shorts “Short Story Month” Selection

From one of the most celebrated short-story writers in American literature, the story that launched a thousand homages, in word and film—a haunting meditation on love and companionship, and finding one’s way through the dark.

“What We Talk About When We Talk About Love” is included here with its unedited version, “Beginners,” which was originally submitted to Carver’s editor, Gordon Lish. In this eShort, readers can compare both versions of this iconic work of fiction, gaining insight into Carver’s aesthetic and the foundations of the contemporary American short story.

网友对What We Talk About When We Talk About Love / Beginners (A Vintage Short)的评论

但是只有两个故事,what we talk about when we talk about love 和beginners, 其实是一个故事的不同版本,但是也可以看出作者写作思路的发展。入门篇,遗憾就是内容太少,只有这两个故事!

只有一个故事。。。。。。
可怕。。。
现在知道了还有一个是草稿...然而粗略如我并无法很好的体会出草稿和后来版本的nuance。。
可怕。。。迷之kindle edition

In this short story, which incidentally serves as background for the movie, "Birdman", Carver examines the paradox of the human need for love. Love, which most might consider a means of enhancing ones life, is actually so imperious a need that many may risk their very existence in the attempt to secure the presence of love in their life. Carver is so smooth a writer that one may read without noticing that Carver is razor sharp in depicting human interaction. His dialog is succinct, his eye is pitiless. He is dispassionate, yet one feels convinced that he cares for the lives of those about whom he writes. Worth reading and re-reading many times over.

One of the great stories ever wriyten. Read both versions to see how important editing and rewriting are to superb dtories

I liked the thoughts behind the words, behind the story. I would use this book to help students write with expression and mystery. However, what I really loved was to be able to make my own interpretation .

A classic worth reading!
