This is the most painfully beautiful book I have ever read. I can't imagine how the author put all the words together so beautifully to tell his story. It isn't a book about comic con. It's a book about an amazing little boy and the mother who loves him. I give it all the stars there are in the sky.
I am not a gamer or comics fan and have never been to a con, yet I still LOVED this book. Rich characters, fun and creative structure (not only different POVs but different narrative formats woven together), and a plot with enough mystery and surprise in it to keep me hooked start to finish. The writing is very accomplished without feeling overworked, and there is an emotional honesty to it that I like immensely. It's not often I pick up a book that feels satisfying without feeling heavy--it's a "beach read" in that you can fly through it to follow the plot, if you like, but that you can also slow down and savor. I'm also impressed with Proehl's writing from a female perspective; that's often hard for a male author to pull off well but he does it sensitively.
I highly recommend this to anyone not just to anyone who likes the world this book is set in, but to anyone who reads.
A thoroughly enjoyable and fun read, with many lovely turns of phrase. The author wrote a kind of sideways...just a jump to the left (and a step to the right) novel of nerds, cons, cosplayers, cult tv series, super hero movies and most of all -- comic books. But with all new super hero names made up or changed to protect the litigious. Not all lighthearted, though. Can't really do a book about fandom and not mention the darkness, and the plot is built around a really dark moment associated with delusion. I dinged it a star because the main POV was a six year old boy who was one part manic pixie dream child and one part Yoda. Totally unrealistic, but the writing was so lovely, I just rolled with it. Recommended.
It's almost impossible to express how wondrous this book is. It rolls and flies from the page like it has always existed, and yet each page astounds as though it contained the first words I've ever read. I see that it's been compared to Michael Chabon's Kavalier and Clay, but that's simplistic. IN A WORLD where we're all attuned to comic book culture it's not fair to judge one book by another.
Instead this book grabs you by the heart, then dazzles you with its imagination, only to rip your heart out again several pages later. Did K&C do that? Yeah sure, but what have they done for me lately?
Read this book. Please. You'll love it.
Have I ever lied to you? (That you know of?)
