This edition of THERESE RAQUIN is set up for you to read in French without ever having to resort to a dictionary. It marks the more difficult words of each line, then defines them directly across in the margin. It also has footnotes that define full phrases and give comment on social context, etc. Finally, it contains a French-English glossary in the back for many of the other words in the novel.
Kick your feet up and forget about twisting your back picking up your Unabridged Harraps.
At An Anthology of Nineteenth-Century French Short Fiction (French Edition) I have listed as many links to other books in this series as Amazon would allow. The identification of the series isn't always consistent in the titles, but you can always Google "Liguatext Ltd" and click on the "European Masterpieces" link. Go to the dropdown menu for "French Classics" and when you click on a title there, it will take you back to Amazon.
Wow, what a novel. The first time I have read Zola, and now I understand! A brilliant psychological expose of three tormented minds that does not end well for any of the individuals. The novel struck me as a forerunner of the magical realism genre, and I then I read in Wikipedia that pioneering Latin-American writers were influenced by 18th and 19th century European artistic movements such as surrealism. Which made sense to me in the light of Emile Zola's novel.
A love story without F bombs: Nice change
I like how Zola reflects and streams through the story smoothly. I was hooked from the beginning
I am so happy I finally invited. Zola to my world. He and Gustav Flaubert are ripe romantics: What a team; so way head of other realists, and not afraid to toss in a subjective strategy once in a while (II smiled when Zola name - called the murderers.)
Seen Park Chan Wook's film "Thirst"? Now read the book and discover why Zola is such an important, controversial and influential writer. Japanese naturalism wouldn't have existed without him
This was a love story....no wait! This was a horror story! I have never read a book that combined the two opposite passions and created a beautiful, heartbreaking story line. This is the way books were meant to be, with a story line that you still think about long after you have finished reading it.
5-stars for Theresa Raquin.....5-stars and more for Emile Zola!
