This book is written by Bob Burford, a man who decided there is more to life than making big bucks as a television executive. Somewhere in his early to mid-forties, he chose to cut his work schedule in half and pursue the more meaningful things in life--family, friends, and most importantly, the purpose for which God designed him.
While the author makes the case that we should all do this very same thing in our own lives, he does not present the "how to" in a realistic fashion. Of course, this is only my opinion, but the average person may not find themselves in the position of having made millions (or even hundreds of thousands) by the time they are in their mid-forties. The author is also well-regarded in his industry, and was able to cut back on his work schedule at his leisure; in other words, the people he worked with would take him when they could get him, even if it was part-time. Again, not many find themselves in this position.
That being said, Mr. Burford seems aware of this and does make suggestions for those who may not have the same resources as he, but some of these suggestions are a reach.
There is value to reading the book however. Mr. Burford is on point with his assessment that there is more to life than making money or pursuing a position of authority in the work place. The discoveries he has made about his own life, passions, and disappointments, which includes dealing with the death of his son, can help the reader renew perspective on their own priorities.
Half Time isn't for everyone. But if you're considering making a change in your life - from focusing on business to focusing on others - then Half Time may be a great place to help you think more about this. Although the books is written from the perspective of someone who has been extremely successful, the idea of Half Time can apply to anyone. The general idea that the book encourages is that you pause and take stock of your life at your "half time", a consider changing your focus from working on personal success to working on enduring significance. It particularly resonates with those business people who don't feel that employing others, serving clients, paying taxes, giving charitably and raising families is the appropriate measure of significance for them (or perhaps, for those who have achieved enough of this and wish to give back in other areas). I've been amazed at the thousands of individuals who have changed their lives as a result of this book and have invested their time and treasure into building better communities around the world. Thank goodness there is still enough freedom left in the world that these individuals can amass wealth that they can then give back so much more effectively than the social engineering projects tried by big governments.
A good friend recommended this book. I had asked him what to expect in retirement, as it is not too far off for me. He gave me a lot of excellent advice, one piece of which was to read Half Time. I am in my early 60's, and the book is really geared for someone a decade or so younger. Still, I found a lot of excellent information and it was very helpful in my current mindset changing mode.
