The Pronunciation Pairs student book and teacher's manual have been very useful in my ESL instructing classes over the years, which is why I ordered my own latest editions. The teachers' manual has excellent teaching tips, many great ideas, and fits any classroom situation. I particularly enjoy how the authors have paired up the different sounds for both vowels and consonants, as it helps the student appreciate the subtleties of the different sounds that are particularly difficult for second-language learners. I appreciate the section that deals with the particular vowel and consonant difficulties for most second language speakers, such as Spanish, German, Arabic, Serbo-Croatian, Asian, and Italian speakers.
The practice listening tests and conversations, using the vowel or consonants featured in each chapter are clever and entertaining, projecting some humor in the classroom and the lessons. The latest editions have new ideas and a clearer format, as well as the CDs, that replace the original cassettes. An excellent resource!
This is an extremely interesting and well-designed book, different from most ESL books, designed to help the student with the subtleties of English pronunciation. I am using this with a woman in Tokyo. We work by Skype. We are also using a book called Practical English, Second Edition, Level 2, by Tim Harris (C 1987). The two books make a good combination. The latter is now a bit dated, but it's amusing and well set up, progressing at a good pace.
This is a great resource for teaching pronunciation and intonation in English. The Teacher's Manual gives extra activities not found in the Student's Manual. It is nicely organized making it easy to follow or quick to skip around and go directly to the area you need for teaching. I highly recommend this book. Ann Baker did a great job to help you get your job done!
I like the book b/c it has good guidance and recommendations in using the student book. Some authors believe it's not as helpful as a book that groups the pronunciation w/ like words, but I've been using it and my students see how close the pronunciation is, but how far apart the meaning of the words are. So definitely useful.
Very disappointed that the CD only has very few dialogues. Now I need to find and buy the complete CDs!
