Origin of Consciousness in the Breakdown of the Bicameral Mind |
"When Julian Jaynes . . . speculates that until late in the twentieth millennium b.c. men had no consciousness but were automatically obeying the voices of the gods, we are astounded but compelled to follow this remarkable thesis." -- John Updike The New Yorker

I don't have the time to write a proper review for this incredible book. What I'll say is that it's the most important book I ever read as a historian. Every student of history or any sort of human subject must read Jaynes' work, not because he is necessarily correct in his theory but more that he is one of the embarrassingly few scholars who have considered the evolution of consciousness in the past thousands of years. There is no point in having an opinion about people in any given time if you don't take into consideration that they may have had completely unique mental behavior. I for one know that Jaynes was onto something - it's not a coincidence that suddenly only a few thousand years ago humans across various continents suddenly began developing written language, self expression, fine forms of science. This is the start of an important field of knowledge, even though it probably won't be acknowledged for a long time.
This is an amazing book and I'm surprise that I am just now getting around to finding out about it and reading it. I must've met it would've been a better Kindle purchase as there are several words I have never used before and my grammar is extensive. I don't want to give any spoilers for Jayne's credible hypothesis however let's just say I noticed that there are a few people that I've written books about this book due to the brilliant deductions put forth about human consciousness. This is a keeper, much like the book, "Doubt". If I accomplished such a work in my lifetime I'd be happy to call it quits with writing. Academic or devout consumer of the written word, you'll want to refer back to this many times.
