Speaking Shakespeare

In Speaking Shakespeare, Patsy Rodenburg tackles one of the most difficult acting jobs: speaking Shakespeare's words both as they were meant to be spoken and in an understandable and dramatic way. Rodenburg calls this "a simple manual to start the journey into the heart of Shakespeare," and that is what she gives us. With the same insight she displayed in The Actor Speaks, Rodenburg tackles the playing of all Shakespeare's characters. She uses dramatic resonance, breathing, and placement to show how an actor can bring Hamlet, Rosalind, Puck and other characters to life. This is one book every working actor must have.

Bought this for a theater class - so glad I did. This book makes the Bard about a hundred times more accessible. All the antiquated and flowery verbiage are explained, the context it gives makes sense of everything Shakespeare wrote. If you're performing Shakespeare, reading a play in school, or just want to be (appear) more cultured, give this book a whirl. It will legitimately make you a better performer, not to mention smarter.

Patsy Rodenburg goes to the heart of the matter. Some useful "intellectual" exercises, and then on to the business of acting -- i.e. leaving the intellectual in the studio (where it belongs) and "taking action" through the use of Shakespeare's language.

As advertised

Excellent, as expected from Ms. Rodenburg. I use it for myself and with students. Clear, concise, and no nonsense it is an excellent teaching resource.

This book was purchased for a young actor friend who is studying Shakespeare. He has the added challenge of being a non-native speaker and this book has been a tremendous help with learning the rhythms of English speech. Highly recommended for anyone interested in performing Shakespeare, with advice from someone who is clearly an expert.
