很不错的一本书,值得读。
This book brings home the tremendous sacrifice of young people who are faced with a simple choice; am I willing to look the other way while evil is being done to my brothers and sisters, or do I help in any way I can? The revolutionary generation pledged, "their lives, their fortune, and their sacred honor" ,the civil war generation fought the bloodiest war in our history, wwll fought tyranny in horrible conditions both in the Atlantic and the Pacific at the same time. In all of these cases, the majority of the people who fought knew how to stand on their own before they had to choose to fight or look the other way. I worry that people raised in a nanny state, afraid of guns, protected from the consequences of their own mistakes, and who accept corruption because it is "their guy" doing it will ever stand and suffer for other's or even their own freedom. We also had a vibrant manufacturing economy and money to help other nations fight and later rebuild. We are now 16 trillion in debt due to the need to give everybody more than we can afford in exchange for votes and power to give away even more! The great generations would not submit to this soft tyranny at home any more than they would to hard tyranny when they faced it. Please wake up and think of the brave souls who gave you your freedom. Do not vote freedom away for security, or you will not have either (Franklin).
Ambrose has given us several high quality, scholarly books included at least 3 books covering combatants in the European theatre of WWII. This work (as stated in the book) is the result of a suggestion that he combine the stories from his earlier works to give us a smooth product that ties officers, foot soldiers and even the politics of war into one work. IMHO this is not as easy to do as it sounds. In general Ambrose succeeds in his task. However at times it seems more pasted parts than one fluid story. I would also agree with some critics who find that he does a better job with the GI Joe than he does with some of the highest ranking officers in Eisenhower's leaders. But with this said, I enjoyed the book and appreciated the work that SA performed to put three pieces into one book. I would strongly recommend this book to anyone that doesn't want to read several books but would like to have a closer look at what made "The Greatest Generation". Ambrose' "Victors" should replace some of the boring books used in some high school and many college history of ww2 classes.
I expected a more in-depth review of General Eisenhower's decisions related to his responsibility as supreme commander of allied forces in the european theater. However, this alone, is my only objection as the body of the book revolved around the young men, both junior officers and non-commissioned officers who carried off the success from D-Day to the German homeland. The interviews and remembrances of those soldiers was captured in great detail by Mr. Ambrose along with an objective narrative of mistakes and miscalculations by not only Eisenhower, his immediate generals and some instances of officers above the rank of lieutenant. Some passages will evoke a smile or laughter while most will make you wonder how these men and boys endure such inhumane conditions. Their survival was dependent upon each other and working as a cohesive unit. A must read to properly understand the commitment and determination of these soldiers to persevere conditions most of us will NEVER comprehend.
