Ghost Boy (English Edition)

In January 1988, aged twelve, Martin Pistorius fell inexplicably sick. First he lost his voice and stopped eating; then he slept constantly and shunned human contact. Doctors were mystified. Within eighteen months he was mute and wheelchair-bound. Martin's parents were told that an unknown degenerative disease had left him with the mind of a baby and he probably had less than two years to live. Martin went on to be cared for at centres for severely disabled children, a shell of the bright, vivacious boy he had once been. What no-one knew is that while Martin's body remained unresponsive his mind slowly woke up, yet he could tell no-one; he was a prisoner inside a broken body.

Then, in 1998, when Martin was twenty-three years old, an aromatherapy masseuse began treating him and sensed some part of him was alert. Experts were dismissive, but his parents persevered and soon realised their son was as intelligent as he'd always been. With no memory of the time before his illness, Martin was a man-child reborn in a world he didn't know. He was still in a wheelchair and unable to speak, but he was brilliantly adept at computer technology. Since then, and against all odds, he has fallen in love, married and set up a design business which he runs from his home in Essex.Ghost Boyis an incredible, deeply moving story of recovery and the power of love. Through Martin's story we can know what it is like to be here and yet not here - unable to communicate yet feeling and understanding everything. Martin's emergence from his darkness enables us to celebrate the human spirit and is a wake-up call to cherish our own lives.

So many books are so poorly written that reading them is drudgery for me. I'm an avid reader, but I find myself putting quite a few books back on the shelf after the first few chapters. Mr. Pastorius grabbed my attention on page one and kept it through the acknowledgements at the end. I still can't stop thinking about him. I've been an RN for many years. This book made me question my attitude toward many patients who've been in my care. I'm kind and compassionate, for sure, but could I have missed something with some of my most debilitated patients? For at least one of them was there a keen intellect, hidden by a silent, twisted body? This book makes me wonder.

The story is fascinating, and a gift to every one who has the opportunity to read it.

It teaches us much about human beings and the ways we behave toward one another. I couldn't help thinking, throughout the story, how different the outcome might have been if Martin's father had listened to the doctors and to his wife and placed the boy in an institution. We are deeply fortunate that this father trusted his instincts and sacrificed so much to care for his son day after day for years on end.

If the copy editors had done a better job, I'd have given this book five stars. The editing is so poor that at times it quite distracts from the story. I want to take a blue pencil to it and send it back!

But the story is amazing. I wish Mr. Pistorius had told us more about his time before he was able to communicate, but I can't fault him for not wanting to re-visit that any more than he did. His recovery is absolutely amazing. May all who are blessed to read his story find it ever an inspiration when our courage and determination flag. The human spirit is indomitable.

I give gratitude for this book and for the many people (including those undoubtedly over-worked copy editors) who brought it to us.

As someone who has worked with people with all types of disabilities for over thirty years, I was drawn to this story. The author and his wife were interviewed on Public Radio and I bought the book based on hearing just a little of their story. It is very well written, and a compelling plea for dignity, equality and independence.

This book is an excellent reminder that things are not always what they seem. It was thought provoking and bought forth a mix of gratitude, guilt, shame and finally determination. I realize that there will always be someone worse off than you. A person could be born in the poor family, but become successful years later through natural born intelligence and hard work. Martin was much better off than many others in the world simply by the fact that his family is fairly well off and his parent's rare attitude. Are they more or less fortunate than a rich boy who was born with IQ on the left tail of the bell curve and ended up abandoned?
Martin's tale also opened my eyes to my own short comings. Even though I like to think of myself as 'nice' and have never purposely treated anyone badly in my life, I can't help but recall and regret my reaction to people with disabilities in the past. I've never been rude, but have been guilty of stereotyping in my head. Finally, the sheer mental strength displayed my Martin resonates through me, and actually lifted me from the slump I've been in for the past month... All in all, I'm really glad I stumbled upon this book.
