This is another volume ( like the recent Monster Of Frankenstein Collection) which looks and feels just like an Epic Collection. It even has text pages and house ads just like an Epic Collection. This volume is a very thick 430 pages on quality paper with vibrant color and excellent art restoration. All this between thick cardboard covers.
This book collects every appearance of Bobbi Morse from her 1971 first appearance as a brunette in Astonishing Tales #6 through 1983's Hawkeye mini-series, where her and Clint ( Hawkeye) Barton first met.
The stories reprinted here in their entirety are the Ka-Zar stories from Astonshing Tales #10, #12-13, #15-20 (plus excerpts from AT #6-7 and #10). From the Black & White magazines the Ka-Zar story from Savage Tales #8 and the Huntress story from Marvel Super Action #1. Then going back to color comics Marvel Team-Up #95 and Hawkeye Mini-Series #1-4.
The book is really a who's who of Marvel's great 70's artists featuring Barry-Windsor Smith, Don Heck, Herb Trimpe, Neal Adams, Gil Kane, Marie Severin, Rich Buckler, Dan Adkins, John Buscema, George Evans, Werner Roth and more.
Who created created Bobbi ( Mockingbird ) Morse. Well if you check Wikipedia it will tell you Len Wien and Neal Adams. That is because they created the first story with Dr. Barbara Morse. A Man-Thing story created for the canceled Savage Tales #2, which sat on the shelf until Roy later found a way to use it in the color Ka-Zar comic.
The book starts with two pages from Astonshing Tales #6 and a page from Astonshing Tales #7. Here a nameless brunette is calling on Lord Plunder (Ka-Zar) English Estate. These introductory pages just foreshadow the adventure starting in Astonsinhing Tales #8 where the now blonde Barbara Morse has crashed in Ka-Zar's Hiden Primitive Jungle. These early stories are from Gerry Conway, Roy Thomas and Gary Friedrich. While I have seen no written verification, I would guess that Roy was the one (in his editorial capacity) decided to name this woman Barbara Morse in hopes of building up to the unused Wein/Adams story.
In Astonshing Tales #12 written by Thomas with framing art by John Buscema we finally get that Man-Thing story which is only his 2nd appearance. The fact that Barbara was originally a scientist in the Everglades is rarely explored after this story.
In Astonshing Tales #15 we finally get a permant writer with Mike Friedrich. In this issue Bobbi is first used as her nick name. Friedrich also starts the romance between Bobbi and Ka-Zar. During this run the Sheild Agent aspect which was used from the start is now played up more and she is often just referred to as Agent 19.
Because this is not a Ka-Zar collection despite appearing to be we skip Ka-Zar #1 and #2 when he gets his own book because Bobbi isn't in them.
Next up is the Ka-Zar story from Savage Tales #8( yes that title was later uncanceled ). Gerry Conway writes this tale with beautiful B&W art from Jon Buscema and Tony DeZuniga. This story has Bobbi and for the first time Shanna The She-Devil arriving in the Savage Land. Shanna would eventually take over as a love interest for Ka-Zar and Bobbi was gone from the strip.
Next up and also in B&W is the Huntress story from the one shot Marvel Super Action magazine. It is written by Mike Friedrich with art by George Evans. Bobbi becomes an under cover vigilante named The Huntress. She looks like a masked Modesty Blaise. This story was to be a two part story but was combined to make one 20 page story. This story appeared in 1977 just slightly before the DC Henena Bertinelli version also in 1977. So they both probably planned their versions at the same time.
The backstory on Huntress is she was under cover trying to discover corruption in SHEILD. Next we get Marvel Team-Up #95 where the story continues. Because the DC version got bigger exposure Marvel changed her name her to Mockingbird. This character and costume was designed by Mark Gruenwald for a never finished issue of Spider-Woman. Steven Grant borrowed the costume and gave it to Bobbi Morse.
We close out with Gruenwald's (Story & Pencils) Hawkeye mini-series where Gruenwald reclaims his creation. Clint and Bobbi begin a very rocky relationship after Clint discovers his current lover is a spy.
While it is a long and convoluted road, I had fun revisiting these stories while making Bobbi the focus of the stories. My Higest Recomendation.
