专业书评 From School Library Journal
Grade 5 Up. The more than 50,000 entries in this dictionary for ESL students are based on American English, focusing on its current use, flavor, style, and idiom. The pronunciation guide, which appears only on the inside cover, uses standard American dictionary symbols as well as International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) symbols and gives key words in English, Italian, French, German, and Spanish. A sample page defines the features of the book. A guide to its use explains the bracketed grammar codes that appear in the entries to assist readers with word usage; the codes are listed again on the inside back cover. An extensive and useful section on how to use this resource to learn American English follows with the instructions repeated in Spanish, Chinese, and Japanese. The definitions are wide in scope, frequently including idiomatic usage as well as usage statements. For instance, 40 meanings are listed for the word "fall." Many words have sample sentences to better illustrate their meanings. There are geographical, but no biographical entries. Common roots as well as prefixes and suffixes are included, with lists of English words derived from them. Fifteen full-page illustrations of such settings as a bank, supermarket, hospital, and school are useful and appropriately labeled. The main text is followed by lists of irregular verbs and nouns with irregular or alternate plurals. The format and the typeface make this title readable and attractive. A useful resource.?Sylvia V.
