内容简介 Begun in a weekly paper in 1881, The Devil's Dictionary was continued with some intervals until 1906, when it was first published as The Cynic's Word Book. It is an irreverant dictionary which was so popular in its time that many definitions and anecdotes became part of popular speech. Wickedly humorous, it still has relevance today.

He grew up in Indiana and fought for the Union in the Civil War. He was in the UK from 1872 to 1875, where he wrote for Fun magazine, and in 1887 joined the San Francisco Examiner. He wrote Tales of Soldiers and Civilians in 1892, and compiled the much-quoted Cynic's Word Book, now known as The Devil's Dictionary, for publication in 1906. In 1913 he went to Mexico to report on Pancho Villa's army, and disappeared.

Some may find Bierce sexist, nationalist and racist, but most readers will enjoy his malevolent scepticism and underlying rage against hypocrisy. Ralph Steadman's incisive illustrations perfectly complement the text. A typical example: Gold n. A yellow metal greatly prized for its convenience in the various kinds of robbery known as trade. The word was formerly spelled 'God' - the 'l' was inserted to distinguish it from the name of another inferior deity. Only two years after the book was published in 1911, Bierce disappeared after setting off for Mexico to join Pancho Villa's rebels against the corrupt dictatorial regime of Porfirio Diaz. His legacy is memorable.
