内容简介 Kabul Beauty School "is a remarkable tale of an extraordinary community of women, all of whom have stories to tell, who come together and learn the arts of perms, friendship, and freedom. Arriving in Afghanistan in 2002 with nothing more than a beauty degree and a desire to help, Deborah Rodriguez set out on a course of action that would change her life and those of many Afghan women. The once proud tradition of beauty schools had been all but destroyed and with it Afghani women's ability to support themselves. As one of the founders of the Kabul Beauty School she set about training women and helping them rebuild their lives.
作者简介 Deborah Rodriguez from Holland, Michigan, has been working as a
hairdresser since 1979. In 2002, Rodriguez helped found the Kabul Beauty
School, the first modern beauty school and training salon in Afghanistan.
Rodriguez is now director of the school and owner of the Oasis Salon and
the Kabul Coffee House, all located in Kabul where she lives with her
Afghan husband.
媒体推荐 People - 4 star critics choice 'Rodriguez has written a very gutsy, real-life adventure story for
women... On hearing so many heart-rending stories from local women
decimated by Taliban rule, she opened up a beauty school to give purpose
and money-earning capacity back to then. Her trials and tribulations in
setting up the school and entering an arranged Afghan marriage not only
make fascinating reading but reveal a side to Afghanistan that few
foreigners have experienced or understood. Her courage in tackling gigantic
cultural barriers is also remarkable.'
Entertainment Weekly 'Her bighearted and entertaining memoir, "Kabul Beauty School",
has a gossipy, conversational style familiar to anyone who's gotten
highlights, but Rodriguez never shies away from the misery and oppression
she encounters in the poor, rigidly patriarchal country.'
Publishers' Weekly, starred review 'colorful, suspenseful, funny'
LA Times '"Kabul Beauty School" is laid out masterfully, pulling readers in
from the very first page.... Though not a heavy read, "Kabul Beauty School"
is composed of heartbreak, hope, poignancy and candor. Rodriguez introduces
a culture that will be foreign to many readers, but then proves that
obstacles can be overcome when they're approached with the unshakable
belief that they must be.'
Kirkus Reviews 'Terrifically readable, and rich in personal stories.'
