内容简介 Book DescriptionRudolph W. Giuliani's management and decision-making skills have proven to be outstanding through his years as U.S. district attorney and his two terms as mayor of New York City. And on September 11th, 2001, Giuliani emerged as America's steady hand. In this program, Rudolph Giuliani shares with listeners the principles of leadership that guided him then, and throughout his career. He talks about how he was able to take control, show leadership, and make it clear to New Yorkers and the world that under his stewardship, they were in safe hands.
From Publishers WeeklyNew York's celebrated former mayor explains how he used specific management strategies to run the city and handle crises in this captivating memoir. It's momentarily jarring when Giuliani's familiar voice on the introduction switches to Roberts's voice for the body of the book, but listeners will quickly adjust. Roberts reads the former mayor's words in a calm, authoritative and thoughtful tone. He sounds earnest and persuasive as he expresses Giuliani's point of view. Giuliani's minute-by-minute account of his actions on September 11-trying to coordinate rescue efforts and reassure the populace while reeling from the deaths of firefighter friends he'd spoken to just minutes before-is harrowing. Other anecdotes are equally forceful, as when Yasser Arafat arrived uninvited to Giuliani's U.N. anniversary celebration, and Giuliani insisted on making Arafat leave while attempting to avoid an international scandal. Giuliani's main advice to leaders: surround oneself with talented people, hold daily meetings to keep everyone on track, define the core mission and make sure procedures and policies serve that mission efficiently, demand accountability from everyone (including oneself), show loyalty to employees and become knowledgeable about all subjects related to one's organization or business.
From AudioFileThrough much of his tenure as mayor of New York City, Rudy Giuliani was a controversial figure whose personal weaknesses often overshadowed his political strengths. After September 11, however, the world focused on Giuliani's ability to lead with courage and controlled emotion. In LEADERSHIP, Giuliani demonstrates through vivid, practical examples how he used an aggressive, hands-on management style to deal with everything from petty crime to terrorism. Tony Roberts infuses Giuliani's words with grace and tempered emotion and revels in his take-charge style. Although, at times, Roberts sounds more like a performer than the former mayor/prosecutor, he succeeds in conveying Giuliani's confidence, tenacity, and courage. Giuliani reads the book's introduction with passion, making the listener wonder why he didn't read all of his inspiring words. D.J.S.
From the Back CoverWriting in his familiar voice - a New Yorker's bluntness, leavened by his passion for ideas - Rudolph Giuliani demonstrates in
Leadership how the leadership skills he practices can be employed successfully by anyone who has to run anything. Giuliani's management and decision-making skills have proven to be outstanding through his two terms as mayor of New York City and his years as Associate Attorney General in the U.S. Justice Department. And on September 11, 2001, Giuliani emerged as America's steadiest hand, leading the city and the nation through the worst domestic disaster in our history.
Whether dealing with a catastrophe, or with the many problems large and small that afflict a great city on a daily basis; whether addressing New York's $40 billion budget or issues of infrastructure; whether handling complicated human issues or assembling a brilliant team, Giuliani has relied on a systematic and methodical approach that can work for any manager, in any sized business. Leadership, Giuliani writes, works both ways: it is a privilege, but it carries responsibilities - from imposing a structure suitable to an organization's purpose, to forming a team of people who bring out the best in each other, to taking the right, unexpected risks.
Refreshingly honest, full of powerful stories and compelling examples,
Leadership is Giuliani's own guide to the essential principles that have sustained him throughout his extraordinary career.
