内容简介 The Clarendon Aristotle Series is designed for both students and professionals. It provides accurate translations of selected Aristotelian texts, accompanied by incisive commentaries which focus on philosophical problems and issues. This volume contains a clear and accurate translation of the last two books of Aristotle's Politics, together with a philosophical commentary. It is well suited to the requirements of students, including those who do not know Greek. The Politics is a key document in Western political thought; it raises and discusses many theoretical and practical political issues which are still debated today. In Books VII and VIII Aristotle gives his fullest picture of the ideal civic community, as a model for actual political systems. In such a community citizens share equally in political deliberation by drawing on a common conception of the good, and all are educated by the city to participate in its culture. Aristotle's discussion ranges over such issues as commerce, property, marriage, abortion, censorship, education, and the place of music and poetry in civic life. --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.
作者简介 Aristotle was born at Stagira, in the dominion of the kings of Macedonia, in 384 BC. For twenty years he studied at Athens in the Academy of Plato. Some time later, became the tutor of young Alexander The Great. His writings have profoundly affectedthe whole course of ancient and medieval philosophy. T. A. Sinclair was Professor of Greek at the Queen's University of Belfast for 27 years. Trevor J. Saunders is Professor of Greek at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne. --This text refers to the Paperback edition.
编辑推荐 From Library Journal
The past few years have seen a spate of new translations of classic texts in philosophy, in part because of more complete texts on which to base the translations and in part because of a desire to render the texts in a more contemporary English. Simpson (classics and philosophy, CUNY) has produced a fresh and lively translation that is perhaps more logically ordered. He makes a strong case for rearranging the standard order of the books of the Politics to provide a sequence more in keeping with Aristotle's intentions, positioning Books 7 and 8 to follow Book 3. The text begins with a translation of Book 10, Chapter 9 of the Nicomachean Ethics, which Simpson argues is a precursor to the Politics. A comparison with standard translations, such as those of Jowett and Barker, indicates that Simpson put much effort into this version and clarified a number of points that earlier translations left unclear. An excellent addition to all academic and major public libraries.?Terry C. Skeats, Bishop's Univ. Lib., Lennoxville, Quebec
