What If Everybody Did That?

If you drop just one can out the window, it's no big deal...right? But what if everybody did that? What if everybody broke the rules...and spoke during story time, didn't wash up, or splashed too much at the pool? Then the world would be a mess. But what if everybody obeyed the rules so that the world would become a better place? Using humorous illustrations rendered in mixed media, these questions are answered in a child-friendly way and show the consequences of thoughtless behaviour.

From School Library Journal
Kindergarten-Grade 2—An unnamed boy is forced to consider the consequences of his actions in this cautionary tale about making responsible choices. The narrator commits a series of seemingly minor offenses, such as feeding popcorn to the bears in the zoo, throwing an empty soda can out the car window, sneaking a lick of frosting from a wedding cake, and interrupting the librarian during storytime. Each time, an angry adult admonishes him by asking, "What if everybody did that?" causing him to envision the possible outcomes: sick animals, garbage strewn along the highway, a ruined cake, and chaos at the library. Each spread depicts a different episode. The art on the verso shows the boy committing a thoughtless act, and the recto pictures show what could happen if everyone broke the rules. Madden's experience as a greeting-card illustrator is evident in the variety of expressions shown on the faces of the multicultural cast in the colorful mixed-media drawings. This title could be a useful purchase for libraries looking to add to their collections of character-building books.—Martha Simpson, Stratford Library Association, CT

I read this with my third graders on my iPad projecting it with a document camera.. I left the print small so they had to study the pictures and think about what the problem was on each page by looking at what happened on the left side and what would happen if everyone did it on the right side. Then I'd enlarge the print and have someone read the page. It was a great story structure and the students are working hard to create a shortened version of their own. They have had a great time with this book!

We have "had" to read this book every night for nearly 2 weeks now! My son loves it, it's straight forward and the pictures offer up a chance for us to discuss the repercussions of the young mans poor choices/actions. We use the phrase "what if everybody did that!" all the time time when we see things out and about.

The words to share a point of view were fine. The pictures were nice and bright, very colorful, good illustrations, but the pictures themselves exaggerated the point being made. I should have looked harder at the preview/reviews because the reason for not feeding animals at the zoo isn't so they won't get fat, splashing water at the swimming pool won't necessarily empty a public pool of water, although there is a better reason to illustrate not to splash, and and not everyone who blows the wrapper off the straw does it to be mean- blowing is a skill young kids need to work on and my family actually does blow the wrapper off the straw, but we don't shoot them at people outside our family and we pick up our litter. I was quite disappointed with the book and in the future I'll look harder at the reviews and previews. I disagreed with a few of the values illustrated by the photos, but to make the most of the book I asked my child his opinion of what point was being made on each page, I pointed out the silliness of the photos, and shared with my child why I either agreed or disagreed with the pictures.

Used this book in family counseling session to teach children responsibility over their actions and foster communication on what the world would be like if everyone did what the wanted when ever they wanted without obeying rules or laws. Great way to begin important discussions with children.
