一直没有机会给2岁半的女儿介绍名画, 一方面是没有合适的开本,另一方面是文字。
这套书书的开本特别适合孩子自己翻阅,文字也很简练押韵。
I am a sucker for children's books with beautiful illustrations. So I almost did not buy these books because I figured my LO is exposed to so much beautiful artwork in the rest of her books. Then I thought, I really am trying to expose her to lots of different things, including art, so I should expose her to some impressionism. What I did not realize is that each book is a little story that rhymes. The author(s) have paired perfect text with each painting. For example, Van Gogh starts out with the Sunflowers (how many are open and how many are shut), and ends with everyone needing to rest under a Starry Night. Even without the art, the stories would be sweet.
My LO is 18 months and these are just right for her. I considered waiting till her birthday to give the books to her but they seem so perfect for her age, I figured that the more times she opens them the more likely she is to recognize the paintings in the future. She already has picked out the moon in "Starry Night" and can identify it as a "painting".
These are the only books in our house that contain impressionist art. Therefore, I expect that these will be some of the board books that we keep even when she technically has aged out of them.
I would say that if you like impressionism, or you want to expose your child to "fine" art (I hate that word but cannot think of an appropriate substitute at the moment) as one of many experiences, definitely buy this set.
When my daughter got these books for her first child, I thought they were nice. The colors are true to the original art and large enough to easily identify the work. And then, my daughter took said first child on outing to an art museum. When her two and half year old turned a corner and looked up to correctly identify "Van Gogh!", well that even impressed a stranger in the room who incredulously asked, "HOW old is she?" Not surprisingly, my opinion on these books changed from just 'nice' to amazing. I totally underestimated what a powerful learning tool these would be. I bought a set for my other grandchildren, and will be giving them as gifts. You should, too!
I liked it, BUT I can't say that it's a must have a normal family's collection. For one, the quality of the books is low and I fear I (as an Adult) am going to bend the cardboard. The pricepoint is quite good for getting 4 books, and they are all pretty good. I enjoyed the pictures curated and the rhyming text to tie them together, but I can see how it would annoy some people. The unfortunate thing is, I think I enjoy these books more than my toddler son. I find this series, despite it's gimmicky indie boardbook style, a better fit for older children and even adults (minus the rhyming text that people complain about).
