Nothing but Trouble: The Story of Althea Gibson

Althea is nothing but trouble! Everyone agrees: her mama, her daddy, her teacher, even the policeman. But when Buddy Walker, the play leader on Althea's street in Harlem, watches her play paddle tennis, he sees something more: pure possibility. Buddy buys Althea her very own stringed tennis racket, and before long, she's on her way to becoming a great athlete—and to proving that she's more than just trouble.

Althea Gibson was the first African American ever to compete in and win the Wimbledon Cup. Born in 1927, she was a spirited child and became an enormously talented athlete. Sue Stauffacher's lively text, paired with vibrant paintings by artist Greg Couch, captures the exuberance, ambition, and triumph of this remarkable woman. Readers will cheer from the stands as Althea transforms from playground tomboy to Wimbledon champion.

"The prose is rhythmic and has the cadence of the street, and it's a treat to read aloud ... [T]his is an affecting tribute to a great athlete, and a story to both enjoy and inspire."

Starred Review, Publishers Weekly, August 27, 2007:
"[A] sharp evocation of her spirited and appealingly pricky personality. Boys and girls of all levels of athleticism will find much inspiration in these pages."

不错,孩子很喜欢,值得推荐!

I loved this book! The illustrations are really wonderful and started some interesting conversations with the kids I have read it to. I also like that she had to learn some valuable lessons in order to win at Wimbledon - like how to be a good sport, control her anger, and learn the rules of the game. The book also does a great job of talking about her past and how she overcame some hyperactivity and getting into trouble to do some excellent things. Lastly, I loved how the book talked about the importance of being grateful to those who help you along the way. Definitely recommend:-)

It's always good for kids to read about flawed heroes. Nobody really, deep down, wants to read about some guy whose only "flaw" is that they didn't brush their teeth before breakfast.

Althea Gibson, as the title should make clear, has bigger flaws. As a kid, she was a petty thief. She didn't attend class. She stayed out late. And when she was given an opportunity and people fell all over themselves to help her, all she could do is say she didn't come to work on her *manners*, just her *sports*.

She is fun to read about, that's for sure. And the triumph of being the first black person to win a Grand Slam (along with her partner, the first Jewish person to do the same) is sweeter for all that we learn that working on her self control helped with that.

There's a nice afterword in the end with more information, including names of her own autobiographies.

The one thing about this book I'm not to sure of is the artwork. Throughout the book, Althea is drawn with a wave of rainbow colors around her and following her. It does convey movement and all... but it also looks a little strange. I'm not sure what I think about it yet.

As famous as she was and being the "Jackie Robison of tennis" I'm surprised she is not more well-known today. This is a picture book story of a self-confident, what's-it-to-you young (and older) lady who, admittedly, could be, and certainly was, trouble at times, and as a competitor she was certainly trouble for her tennis rivals, defeating them by winning championships. The author's note at the end of the book is also quite interesting. As one other reviewer wrote, I, too, am not fully drawn to the illustrator's pictorial interpretation of the story.

Nothing But Trouble, The Story of Althea Gibson (by Sue Stauffacher; illustrated by Greg Couch) [...] is a remarkable short journey of an unruly, precocious, athlete Althea Gibson. She could play any sport and was good at it, everywhere she went; everyone would say `Althea Gibson, you're nothing but trouble!' There was one person, musician Buddy Walker, who saw only possibilities in Althea. Equipped with her behavior, energy, a tennis racket and tennis training........the rest is history.

She never forgot Buddy Walker for helping the wildest tomboy in Harlem see the possibilities. "Tonight in the conclusion of a long and satisfying journey. It all started on one of New York's play streets when Buddy Walker, a play street supervisor, said, Althea, `I believe you can become a good lawn tennis player.' With those words, he handed me my first tennis racket. Tonight I thank Buddy Walker for a most satisfying victory" says Althea.

This is an excellent way for kids to begin reading, discover an engaging piece of history and make a new discovery about themselves.
