Else Holmelund Minarik first introduced readers to her timeless character in the classic Little Bear. The book's publication, with illustrations by Maurice Sendak, launched the I Can Read series. This much-loved author continues to write stories for children at her home in New Hampshire.

I love hearing my child read these books aloud to me. As a "Beginning Reading 1" set of "I Can Read" books, these books have words that are simple, yet they tell a sophisticated and engaging story. (According to the back of the front cover, Little Bear is the very first "I Can Read" book.) The chapters are 10-15 (well-spaced) pages long, and there are some pages that have only words and no illustration. Sometimes this is a bit daunting for my 5-year old, but he is a trooper and reads on through to the end of the chapter. He usually has questions or comments at the end, too. As an adult, I love the interaction between Little Bear and his parents, and I actually find each chapter, which is really a self-contained story, entertaining. The illustrations are classic, and while they are old-fashioned, this has never been a problem for my child. We've gotten to talk about old-style cars (That's like the one in "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang"!) and pedal sewing machines as a result. My son has many modern and contemporary-looking books to choose from, too, yet he happily reads the classic Little Bear stories.
This is the most lovable book that you can find anywhere. The drawings are exquisite, done before Sendak developed his own peculiar way of drawing that appeals as much to adults as to children. These drawings would appeal to anyone of any age, too, but they are more delicate and more realistic and not at all scary as some of Sendak's work can be to children who don't like monsters.. Minarik's text is perfect for reading to a 2-year-old, but a 6-year-old learning to read will still enjoy the gentle humor while s/he learns to read. I Can Read Books are meant for beginning readers but are well suited to children aged 2 to 6 (and their parents).
Little Bear came into my life in the early 1960s, when I discovered and began to read these stories to our (Cecelia's and my) children, Todd born in 1961, CC born in 1962, and Carolyn born in 1966, at their bedtime. The children were enchanted, and so was I. I don't know what became of the original copies; maybe I gave them away.
Later,I read replacement copies to CC's children and to Carolyn's, at the close of day, tucking them in.
I ordered and received several of the boxed sets recently with the specific purpose of distributing them to third grade teachers in two of Tallahassee's public schools. Seemed to me that Little Bear was just the ticket to engage 8- and 9-year olds in the joy of reading - a shortcoming, so I read in the press, of our public schools today. I walked them in them to Ruediger Elementary and Kate Sullivan Elementary and turned them over to grateful persons there with a suggestion that they be circulated to the children to take home. Bread on the waters, I did not ask for nor receive any report of their fate.
My childhood favourite, which I still have in my original hardback - I get these boxed sets to donate to kids who can't afford books. The gentle stories and bear characters appeal to all kids - they are charming.
Wonderful boxed set of some of the best books for children ever written. I wish I had had them when I was a child. Even divided roughly into chapters so that I don't have to read the entire book at a go for my voracious bookworm. Interesting enough to become an instant hit to be read over and over and over and over. Great themes, simple and yet compelling. For moms who are not interested in a TV show character book - Little Bear stands on his own. My daughter has never seen TV and she still loves them. As do I!
