内容简介 These chillingly illustrated tales deliver shivery pleasure for brave young readers willing to confront murderers, body snatchers, madmen, and other creatures of the night. What terror lurks on these pages, with their eerie, unsettling art, filled with dark shadows and distorted lines? In Guy de Maupassant’s “The Hand,” a hunter proudly displays a gruesome trophy from a manhunt…until the trophy decides to take revenge. The hero of Le Fanu’s “Sir Dominick’s Bargain” makes a deal with the devil: all goes well until the day the devil returns to claim his half of the bargain…
With stories by such classic writers as Poe, Dickens, Robert Louis Stevenson and many others, it’s the perfect Halloween collection for fearless kids.
专业书评 From Booklist
Even those who don't object to abridgments on principle can reasonably expect to learn on the title page that the stories are "abridged and adapted," rather than finding the information on the back cover. Still, these simplified stories read smoothly, and children will find this collection of 21 horror tales quite engaging. The roster of writers, all active during the nineteenth century, includes notables such as Dickens, Lovecraft, Poe, and Stevenson. Even Eugene Field, best remembered as the author of "Wynken, Blynken, and Nod," had a dark side, revealed here in his short story "The Werewolf." Unusually well designed for a collection of scary stories, this large-format volume features dramatically composed illustrations using unusual but effective color combinations and a fine sense of the macabre.
