内容简介 Esmie is a twelve-year-old girl with big plans for her lonely-hearts dad. A funny, touching family story. Esmie's mum died when she was a baby, and she's been brought up single-handedly by her policeman dad. Esmie knows her dad is lonely. He works incredibly long hours, and seems to be married to his job. But Esmie is sure that there's room for love in his life. So, with the help of her au pair Juliette and a lonely-hearts ad, she sets out to find the perfect partner for her dad...
作者简介 Gwyneth Rees is the author of the MERMAIDS trilogy, published by Macmillan in 2001. She has also contributed to many best-selling series under different names. When she's not writing, Gwyneth is a child psychiatrist in a London hospital. She lives in west London with two cats.
媒体推荐 A presumptuous, hip, young French au pair caring for motherless Esmie, 11, and Matt, 15, decides to orchestrate a match-making campaign by encouraging the children to place an ad in the newspaper personals column. Esmie's first-person narrative conveys a yearning for the mother she never knew and an acceptance that the antidote to her father's strict, overprotective parenting should be a new wife for him and stepmother for her. Debut novelist Rees has created a scenario full of wishful thinking couched in the not-quite-mischievous predicament that au pair Juliette devises for both father and children. The ad is answered, a clandestine meeting is arranged, and unpredictable circumstances occur with an all-too-convenient, almost unbelievable ending. Rees's psychiatric background is a little too evident in her British style as several conversations between the 21-year-old au pair, children, and father portray some incredibly insightful analysis of the family's situation. Moderately intriguing, yet ultimately unconvincing. (Fiction. 10-12) (Kirkus Reviews)

Grade 3-6-Esmie, 11, and her teenaged brother live in England with their widowed dad and their French au pair, Juliette. They want to find a new mum, so they set dad up on dates, using "adverts" in the local paper, without his knowledge. Juliette thinks this is a great idea, and helps them. The arrangements get mixed up, and the youngsters only anger their father. The story is cliche driven and predictable. The writing is unconvincing, and the characters never become fully believable, especially the father and Juliette. Still, the book does show that these issues are universal.

Rees's lovely story speaks to kids on many subjects--losing a mother, living with an AU PAIR, and longing for a mother figure. When Esmie and her brother decide to advertise in the newspaper's lonely hearts column for their dad, unknown to him, the results are hilarious. Narrator Kelly Hunter is splendid as the very French nanny, Juliette; the police inspector dad; and the charming Lizzie, who answers the ad and enters the misunderstanding and fun. A wonderful bittersweet story for those of all ages. S.G.B. © AudioFile 2004, Portland, Maine-- Copyright © AudioFile, Portland, Maine --This text refers to the Audio Cassette edition.
