Some people humorously say that it is harder to define happiness than to be happy. Why is it so difficult to make sense of happiness? To what extent do health, wealth and love contribute to happiness?
What is happiness? For each of us, happiness seems to be something different. However, most of us would agree that it is the inner state of positive emotions and feelings, and that it is a harmony between physical and spiritual world. By any definition, happiness is not something we can understand, have a recipe and just make it. Although a variety of biological, psychological, economic, religious and philosophical approaches have tried to identify its sources, nobody can fully experience another person’s particular emotions and feelings. Perhaps, being happy may not depend so much on what they are and what they have as on what they think. It could be as simple as remembering the past, enjoying the present and planning for the future. Or being happy could be like having someone to love, work to do and a clear conscience. In real life, there are some happy who do not have the best of everything but they just make the best everything.
What factors contribute to happiness? Could we be happy if we are in poor health, or short of money, or without family love? Hardly, of course. To begin with, good health must be a most important source of happiness, which requires no further explanation. Next, a great deal of wealth is what makes a difference in life because there are few things that money cannot buy. So, it is good to have money and all the good things that money can purchase, such as food, clothing, housing, cars, entertainment, education and even healthcare. As well, it is good to check up once in a while and make sure that things money cannot buy have not been lost—love and friendship and compassion and conscience and dreams. Finally, happiness may be many a small factor as homely as home because when people look at their lives, the greatest happiness is probably family happiness.
In conclusion, good health, good wealth and family love are important in achieving happiness. However, it is up to people to think to what extent they are happy. It is one thing to define happiness while it is quite another to feel happy physically and spiritually.
