Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? "Games are as important for adults as they are for children." Use reasons and specific examples to support your answer.

  Example Answer: 谢振礼Jeenn Lee Hsieh

Many people in different age groups enjoy the fun of playing different games, the role of emotion in games being the same. Of all kinds of games from "hide-and-seek" to football to war, modern electronic games, such as computer and video games in particular, can trigger emotions of players, children and adults alike. We believe that grown-ups play games to explore moment-to-moment emotional experiences, whether they are overcoming a difficult game challenge or seeking relief from every-day worries.

To begin with, playing games is an important mechanism that allows us to continue to explore as adults, as if to see how good we are in beating the game. It is understandable that players like to face challenges in overcome them. To be able to progress from level to level, usually we require good strategy rather than pure luck, and this is an emotional state which reminds us of those obstacles in real life. Since most games offer compelling challenges with a choice of strategies, they balance game difficulty with play skill through levels, play progress, or play controls. In "Mario Kart", for example, the difficulty of challenge matches the skill of novice and advanced players. This is also true of many other games, including "Top Spin Tennis" and "Crosswords". Therefore, it can be argued that games are important to those adults who are looking for emotion opportunities.

If stress is a problem among working adults, playing games can be a solution. That is to say, in a stressful environment, adult players see games as therapy. As such, the importance of games is underlined by the need to emotionally cope with life's complexity. To illustrate, psychological researches show that people play games not so much for the game itself as for seeking freedom from boredom of work. This means that games are supposed to generate curiosity and excitement that may help players to reduce daily worries. Thus, through playing games, players can move from one mental state to another, and to think or feel something different from the boring reality.

In sum, both the challenge and the freedom provided by games are as useful to adults as they are for children, although the emotional fun varies from degree to degree. And this probably why even those people who do not like playing games find that it is fun to watch the make-believe world. Indeed, for many players addictive to games, what matters are such emotional effects as found in reading fiction--the willing suspension of disbelief.
