The Best Nest by P.D. Eastman is a story for kids that lends a ton of opportunities for the parent or GRANDparent to act and sound it out as reading. From the time my oldest grandson was 6 months old, I read it to him. I would make sounds and motions so he would look at the pictures and even the words as I read. Mr. & Mrs. Bird became real to him as well as Mr. Parker's church. It became so real that when he was about 3 years old and we passed a church with a steeple & bells, he yelled out, "Mr. Parker's Church!" It makes my heart sing just remembering that. I continued to read it to my other 4 grandchildren and it was just as wonderful for them.
This was the first book that each of my grandchildren wanted to learn to read.
As for this particular "The Best Nest" book, I purchased it for my oldest and his fiancee so when they have children, they can read it to them.
I totally and completely recommend this book as being one of the MUST HAVE books for reading to your kids or grandkids.
My 2.5 year old read this book in school as part of a bird-themed week. After reading this book, they took a big box and decorated it like a bird house. They filled it with crinkle wrap and each got a turn playing in the bird's nest. It was one of the highlights of the year!
Because my daughter enjoyed the bird week so much, I asked which books they were reading in school and her teacher recommended this one. It's one of my daughter's favorites now. She loves to hear it. I love the length--it's just enough time for her to sit and pay attention, while taking her on a full story journey. My 1.5 year old can't sit through the whole story just yet--but she's also very active during story time no matter which book we read.
This has been one of my 2.5 year old daughter's favorite books since we got it a few months ago. I highly recommend it.
Had this book and used to read it to my youngest son. He loved the book so much he used to ask me to read it over and over. As he got older he always referred to the book as his "favorite book". He just turned 35 and a year ago he asked me if I remembered the book and we laughed. He just had his 35th birthday and I had the book shipped to his home. He got a real charge out of it. The book got to him just before his B-day. Thank you! Brand new.
P.D. Eastman doesn't get nearly the credit he deserves in the early reader section. We tend to think Dr. Seuss revolutionized this category all on his own, but while Seuss is all about silly rhymes, Eastman's stories all have a strong narrative while still being full of simple words for emerging readers. I have three kids and all have been enthralled with this cute story about two birds wanting a new home.
One of my favorites as a child & still today. Bought it for a friend who has 3 young children. Great book for learning to read. Large text with bright colorful, fun illustrations. I had this book when I was about five years old. Thirty years later I can still visualize every illustration in great detail. Very memorable & made a big impression on me. Teaches the lessons 'There's no place like home' and 'A woman has the right to change her mind.' It's about life & relationships. Get this for your kids!
