Three Tales of My Father's Dragon |
Amazon Review
My Father's Dragon--a favorite of young readers since the 1940s and a Newbery honor book--captures the nonsensical logic of childhood in an amusingly deadpan fashion. The story begins when Elmer Elevator (the narrator's father as a boy) runs away with an old alley cat to rescue a flying baby dragon being exploited on a faraway island. With the help of two dozen pink lollipops, rubber bands, chewing gum, and a fine-toothed comb, Elmer disarms the fiercest of beasts on Wild Island. The quirky, comical adventure ends with a heroic denouement: the freeing of the dragon. Abundant black-and-white lithographs by Ruth Chrisman Gannett (the author's stepmother) add an evocative, lighthearted mood to an already enchanting story. Author Ruth Stiles Gannett's stand-alone sequel, Elmer and the Dragon, and her third volume, The Dragons of Blueland both received starred reviews in School Library Journal and are as fresh and original as her first. (Ages 4 to 8)

Three Tales of My Father's Dragon
We already have the three books but I wanted to get a set for my son's school. I ordered this one but noticed how short it is. The third book is only a few pages long. It didn't say abridged anywhere in the info or on the book jacket. But on one of the first pages it says "A Compilation" which I thought meant put together, but may also mean abbreviated. I sent it to the school anyway since I'd already paid for it. But now I'll find the three separate books so the kids can get the full story.
This book is a collection of three books for children published from 1948 - 1951. They tell the story of a young boy named Elmer Elevator who learns of a dragon trapped on an island and sets out to free him, and all that follows. I had never heard of these stories before they appeared on my daughter's summer reading list but we dutifully read them together over the summer. For the most part, it was a fun experience.
Like many books that start successfully, these are stories of diminishing returns. The first book, My Father's Dragon, is a fun story that focuses on Elmer's rescue of the dragon from Wild Island. The ruses he uses to get past the other wild animals on the island keep the story moving enjoyably from chapter to chapter. The second book, Elmer and the Dragon, though not quite as fun, is still a pleasure. We only meet the dragon briefly at the end of the first book so here we get to know him as he flies Elmer home. The discovery of the treasure on the island of the canaries is a highlight. The last book, The Dragons of Blueland, is a bit of a disappointment, however. The dragon needs help from Elmer to rescue his family who have been trapped in a cave by men who want to capture them. There's a lot of flying back and forth and a quick rescue at the end but the fun factor is missing for the most part.
Still, it's certainly worth the time. Both my son and daughter stayed interested as we read a couple chapters a day for a few weeks. The drawings are nice and, until the end, the action keeps the kids involved. It is definitely worth the time.
I got this as a read-aloud book for my daughter when she was 4 and a half. At that time she wasn't very interested in it and I think we only read a chapter or two before she lost interest, so we shelved it for a later date.
Fast forward to almost a year later and she's now in love with these books! We started taking turns reading to each other but she was so taken by the story that she finished all three of the stories on her own over the course of a couple weeks. It's one of her favorites now and I've caught her re-reading favorite passages several times (much like I used to re-read favorite passages of Lord of the Rings when I was a little girl!) It was the first chapter book she enjoyed enough to read on her own... Highly recommended.
This book is amazing. The first story is told by a young boy about a story his father told him about being a young boy going off to save a dragon on an island. His father meets a cat who tells him about the dragon being held captive and he packs seemingly innocuous things in his backpack and sets off to free the dragon. Along the way he meets all sorts of animals and uses these things to get him to the dragon. The second book is told by Elmer (the boy's father) himself and about trying to get home and the adventures (treasure! another island) and the third story is about the dragon trying to save his family. All three are wonderful. My five year old daughter, who has just started kindergarten and loves dragons, pirates, princesses, animals etc. LOVED this story. It kept her on the edge of her seat and she BEGGED me to read it to her whenever I had a spare minute.
This is a wonderful book to introduce your children to chapter books because there are a few pictures that are well spaced out that keeps their interest, but also the storytelling is engaging. I was enthralled too and never got bored (some kids stories, let's face it, aren't as much fun for us to read as for them). My daughter went to bed with this book, carried around with her, acted out all the scenes with her younger sister and now has moved on to other chapter books (Magic Tree House Series, just as great!). I highly recommend this book for kids 4 and up (my 3 year old get's a little bored and wants more pictures and ends up picking up other books while we read this one). This book will always hold a special place in my heart for helping to get my 5 year old to love chapter books...
Be aware, for those purchasing with intent to use the whispersync audio feature, this only gives you audio for the second book, NOT THE FIRST AND THIRD.
My kids love My Father's Dragon (we have the audible version of the first book) so it seemed very cost effective to purchase this kindle edition for $10 and add the $4 whispersync audio to get all three books on audio! I was sadly disappointed to find the audio advertised is not for the entire series of three book.
If you are purchasing only to read, I'm sure you will enjoy! This is a great series! I couldn't bring myself to lower my star rating even though I was disappointed for my own purposes of purchasing this book.
