Waiting Is Not Easy! (An Elephant and Piggie Book) |
Gerald the elephant learns a truth familiar to every preschooler-heck, every human: "Waiting is not easy!" When Piggie cartwheels up to Gerald announcing that he has a surprise for him, Gerald is less than pleased to learn that the "surprise is a surprise." Gerald pumps Piggie for information (it's big, it's pretty, and they can share it), but Piggie holds fast on his basic principle: Gerald will have to wait. Gerald lets out an almighty "GROAN!" Variations on this basic exchange occur throughout the day; Gerald pleads, Piggie insists they must wait; Gerald groans. As the day turns to twilight (signaled by the backgrounds that darken from mauve to gray to charcoal), Gerald gets grumpy. "WE HAVE WASTED THE WHOLE DAY! And for WHAT!?" Piggie then gestures up to the Milky Way, which an awed Gerald acknowledges "was worth the wait." Willems relies even more than usual on the slightest of changes in posture, layout and typography, as two waiting figures can't help but be pretty static. At one point, Piggie assumes the lotus position, infuriating Gerald. Most amusingly, Gerald's elephantine groans assume weighty physicality in spread-filling speech bubbles that knock Piggie to the ground. And the spectacular, photo-collaged images of the Milky Way that dwarf the two friends makes it clear that it was indeed worth the wait. A lesson that never grows old, enacted with verve by two favorite friends. (Early reader. 6-8)—Kirkus

故事简单明了,就是太贵了,贵的有点不值,一本书就几句话………
很适合初学者,故事很有趣
It certainly is not easy to wait! My girls and I have been waiting for this book since we pre-ordered it in April!
For those of you who might be unfamiliar with this series, Elephant and Piggie is a series of easy readers featuring a neurotic elephant and his friend Piggie, who is a nice foil for Gerald. The books are very silly; there is usually a misunderstanding, and quite a bit of comic relief. The text is simple, and the character speak via voice bubbles, using simple language like,
"I have a surprise for you!"
"Yay! What is it?"
"The surprise is a surprise!"
"Oh."
The illustrations enhance the simple text. Elephant and Piggie are put up against a white background. This allows emphasis to be placed on facial expressions and body language. This is a wonderful tool for helping children understand how a character is feeling.
Waiting Is Not Easy is a wonderful entry in the franchise. The snippet of text I shared is from the beginning of the book. Piggie has a surprise for Gerald, and he is very excited. The only problem is that Gerald literally can't deal with waiting, and he gets more and more anxious about the surprise. He groans audibly, and his groan voice bubble even knocks Piggie over. She remains patient with him, and the payoff when the surprise is revealed proves to be worth the wait.
My three girls (7,5,5) loved this story. They giggled at Gerald's impatience, and they enjoyed the surprise. The Elephant and Piggie books don't always have a lesson at the end, so I appreciated that this story conveyed the message that good things come to those who wait.
I would absolutely recommend Waiting Is Not Easy to preschoolers through children in the early years of elementary school. The voice bubble format makes this an ideal story to act out with an emerging reader. I know that we will continue to enjoy this story, just like the rest of the Elephant and Piggie stories.
Do you like waiting? We think this book is awesome because it is funny! For example, Gerald's GROAN bubbles knock Piggie down. Another reason we like it is because we liked when Gerald yells, "PIGGIE!!!!" We like the ending where Gerald has a surprise for Piggie. When Piggie said, "I cannot wait," we thought, "Oh no! Here we go again!" We think Waiting is not Easy is a great book because it has a great lesson about waiting. You should read Waiting is Not Easy!

I honestly don't know who enjoys Mo Willems' Elephant and Piggie books the most: my 2 year old daughter, my 4 1/2 year old son, or me.
This book was actually backordered when I looked for it (yes, really), but it was worth the wait. My son has actually referred to this book when told that he has to wait for something that can't be rushed (spoiler alert: Piggie and Gerald- the elephant- wait all day for the stars to come out at night).
I don't usually "do" voices while reading to my kids, but these books are so conducive to a high pitched pig and a low pitched elephant that you can't NOT do them. All three of us laugh every time we read them. My son had this book memorized after two or three readings, and now loves to "read" it with me, or to his grandparents. (Sometimes he's Piggie and I'm Gerald, sometimes we switch, and sometimes I hear him doing both voices while "reading" to his little sister- then they both erupt in giggles.) He does the silly voices, and traces his fingers along the words, even though he can't actually read yet. Of all the books in our home- and we have many- the Mo Willems books are the ones he gets excited to learn how to read himself.
If I could give this book and its series companions a sixth star, I would.
This is the second Elephant and Piggie book that we have purchased for my daughter and she LOVES them (she is almost 2)! It is a very interactive, unique style of children's book. It requires animation on the reader's part and my daughter loves how excited my husband and I are when we read the book. She now requests the book by asking for elephant and/or piggie and gets excited when we start to read it!
It also has a good lesson for children...good things come to those who wait! Whenever my daughter is being impatient or whiny and I tell her "waiting is not easy, is it?" she immediately smiles and says piggie! Impatience is something that everyone deals with, and in this book Gerald the Elephant is having an internal struggle of not wanting to wait for Piggie's surprise. He goes back and forth between waiting and getting frustrated by the fact that Piggie's surprise is not ready right now! In the end he waits and the surprise is well worth it.
I do appreciate that this book has such an important lesson, but is also fun to read and my daughter gets really into it! Well worth every penny and I think my husband and I will buy her a few more Elephant and Piggie books for her birthday coming up! Great book to add to any children's book collection.
