Wow. That was my first thought when I started this book & when I ended it. Melissa de la Cruz held out on us; there's so much going on in the Blue Bloods universe, that it's unreal; there's such life under a concept that seems so simple, but with such effortless complexity.
In this book we find the Blue Bloods reeling from the attack in Rio that killed the strongest Wardens in the Coven, along with revealing silver bloods in their midsts. We see Schuyler on the run with Oliver, her conduit, and we see Mimi and Jack separated, as well. Bliss is in an unusual state & her sister Jordan, is still missing.
Much like in the other books, Schuyler is her usual, awful self. While on the run with Oliver she leads him to believe she loves him and him alone, only to run back to her obsession when he pops back in the picture. She refuses to see the big picture, along with refusing to see herself as a home wrecker she's galavanting with an engaged man & never thinks he's a piece of shit for what he does.
Mimi, though, has become a favorite of mine! Whereas she was shallow, insecure, & darkly hilarious in the first three books, we see her character deepened, along with how she really feels about her connection with Jack. I was saddened to see her return to her old ways once she makes it back to New York after leaving the Venators (she temporarily aids them), but I still loved her.
Jack was a little more accessible in this book, though he was completely paper thin in Revelations (book three), & we saw his strength. We saw him fight side by side with his father, fight for the person he loves, & continue to be incompetent. We also see how weak he is; how he, metaphorically, spits in Mimi's face numerous occasions, & then acts like nothing happened.
The plot's so fast-paced in the beginning of this book, it's lovely! We get views of Rio, other foreign places, along with an inside look into what Venators really do. We see intricately laid plot threads come to fruition and tons of action. I will say, though, that plot threads laid in Blue Bloods that were tied up in this book were completely underwhelming. I mean, the biggest thing we've all been waiting for from book one literally happens in a paragraph, & then that person's off into la la land.
No joke.
After the debacle in South America, Schuyler's grandfather was killed by Leviathan, Lucifer's brother, and Leviathan killed Lawrence. The conclave doesn't believe Leviathan killed Lawrence, so Schuyler and her best friend Oliver have to go on the run to escape punishment for a murder she didn't commit. Back home, the Conclave is in complete disarray, and Bliss is being overcome by the demon inside her- Lucifer. Mimi has joined Kingsley Martin and the other Venators trying to locate the Watcher (formerly hidden as Bliss's sister Jordan) to help them locate Lucifer. The Van Alan Legacy, by Melissa De La Cruz, is the darkest and most mature story in the series so far, and it will keep you wanting more.
Schuyler and Oliver barely stay in one place for longer than a day or two. After a year of hiding, they are worn out and seek the help of the European coven- the same coven that has been estranged from the New York coven for generations. In doing so, they are almost captured by Leviathan. When Jack Force comes to their rescue, it brings up more than concerns about the Conclave wanting to punish them- it brings back all the feelings Schuyler has for Jack- feelings she can't have since he is to be bonded to Mimi.
Meanwhile, Bliss has lost a year of her life to Lucifer, who she acknowledges as The Visitor. Finally, after losing a full year, she learns to suppress the Visitor, and she can even control him or see through him when he is controlling her. It is this control that gives her an idea of what Lucifer has planned- using Schuyler to break open the gates of hell. Now the Blue Bloods teens must come together to stop Lucifer, but can they do it in time? Will the Conclave and the rest of the 400 finally believe them that Lucifer and the Silver Bloods are stronger than they thought?
This story is growing up with each installment, which I really like to see. I struggle with a series that stays at one level or meaning and understanding. It seems to keep the readers in a stationary spot for a while, especially students like mine who only read 2-3 books a year. Therefore, a series that grows with the reader is a big hit in my eyes- both for the reading ability and the maturation of the reader. This story does get a lot darker than the rest of the series. The clothes, shoes, and designer handbags fall to the wayside as plots, plans, murders, and Lucifer himself take the foreground. In a way, I like this progression. This is the fourth book, so it wasn't sudden, but it wasn't too slow, either. My only problem with this series is that each installment ends on a cliffhanger.
This book is a close follow-up to Revelations, so a re-read is in order. Despite the book's setting of 1 year post-Cordova, the book feels like it takes place the next day. The characters haven't changed since the last page of Revelations, even though a year has gone by.
The relationships quickly change in book 4, and I have a fear this book is going the length of the magic number 7. There are 7 houses, 7 gates, etc. I think we're in the middle of this series. This book isn't long, but major plot developments and character details come forth. The themes explored in the book: Is anyone ever really dead? Is history fated to repeat itself? Are we bound by destiny or by our own choices? Is there ever a point where we are unable to forgive the past and pay the piper for our misdeeds? Does love last forever?
I recommend this book as the best of the Blue Bloods books. It's too short... and the next one is hard to wait for. Fast plot, good developments, good romantic evolution, and good future set-up. We even got somewhere with Charles and Allegra, Schyler & Allegra, and Bliss & Allegra! Finally!!
I am a huge fan of Melissa's ever since her Au Pair series, so of course I love all the Blue Blood's books. This book did not disappoint - I thought it was brilliant. It was worth the wait from last October when Revelations came out.
I think that overall, the book is good, but you definitely have to be keeping up with the rest of the series to really understand. I love the characters and I think she did really well with the timeline jump. The only drawback that I found is that I would really have loved to read the story starting from the end of the third book. Other than that, it's a great book.
However, I bought the Kindle edition, and it had a few typos. It didn't really distract from reading, but I was a bit disappointed with the extra spaces between words and sometimes I would have to skip over a word that didn't make sense.
Conclusion: the book is amazing, so get the hardcover! You'll love it.
