If you loved The Giver don't set your expectations too high for the book Gathering Blue. this is the second book in The Giver series and to be honest, it was extremely difficult to get through. I did however get through it and I'm glad that I did.
In Gathering Blue we are introduced to a new character and new storyline. This book was extremely slow and did not grab my attention the way The Giver did. It is set in a different type of society almost opposite of the one we see in The Giver. This society seems to live in a kingdom where different classes exist and the sick and crippled are treated as outcasts. Unlike The Giver, the higher ups in this society want the people to remember history and how they came to be.
It was not until the ending of the story that I began to become fully engaged with the plot. Towards the conclusion the reader begins to see connections that can be made to The Giver. I have not read the last two books in the series, but I am predicting that somehow the characters from both stories will somehow become intertwined with each other. This idea makes me extremely excited to finish the series!
Although I cannot give this book a high rating I still recommend that any fan of the book The Giver should read Gathering Blue.
I have always loved to read, but after becoming a mother, working in a very demanding profession that requires extended deployments each year, and working towards my master's degree at night, I found myself failing to devote much of my very little free time to reading. Last year, I decided to change that and sought to find recommended series that would draw me in with great characters, a fascinating story line, and intriguing implications about real life.
My favorite series of all time has been the Ender's Quartet and I also really enjoyed other Young Adult (YA), Apocalyptic, Utopian,or Futuristic series like the Hunger Games. In all of my searches and the many "Top 10/Top 100" lists that I came across, The Giver Quartet was among the top choices for both teenagers and adults.
Before I get into some of the more detailed review (and potentially spoilers), if you only want to know the basics, here it is: The book Gathering Blue follows The Giver very well. It is an easy to read book, as is the entire series, and if you are an avid reader like me, you could finish the entire series within a weekend. Gathering Blue, which appears to lead the reader into a completely different world from The Giver, ends with a twist that ties the two books and the series together. I thoroughly enjoyed the characters and the plot and would highly recommend this for anyone looking to find a series worth spending time on.
Now, for more detail.
Like many others who have read Gathering Blue, I consider The Giver one of the truly great books that everyone should read. I had read George Orwell's 1984 in the past, but found that The Giver was an even more powerful story. Gathering Blue does not have quite the impact on the reader as The Giver, but I think part of that may be due simply to the fact that it is in the shadow of The Giver and not read as a a separate story. If this were read on it's own, I think it might be even more highly thought of. That being said, it is difficult to review this book without comparing it to The Giver.
The society outlined at the beginning of the book does not appear to be living in such a compelling state of deprivation as what was introduced in The Giver. Kira, the lead character, is endearing as a tough heroine facing an unsympathetic world. She can be related to and she is likeable. The futuristic world that Lois Lowry describes is not unrealistic and does not require the reader to understand a completely foreign world. It could very easily be a version of our own world in the future. For readers who have enjoyed Game of Thrones, Ender's Game, or Dune, this world does not rely heavily upon sci-fi or fantasy ideas. It feels familiar and real, enabling the reader to be transported easily into this brutish and complex survivalist world. Where the Giver was more futuristic, this world in Gathering Blue appears to be more primal.
What I like about this world and this story is that it does feel very much like one of many versions of our own earth's future. Kira lives in a community that does not accept her due to her disability, despite her special talent for embroidery. After suffering through tragedy and being forced to face a challenge for her property, Kira is brought into a world that she had no idea existed. I enjoyed that Lowry tied in our own world so well to the book, to include what Kira describes as the song and images which tell the "story of mankind".
The story was enjoyable, easy to follow, and draws the reader in. Yet, the favorite part about this book is that it is tied to The Giver at the very end. I won't spoil that ending for you, but I will reassure readers that this book provides an intriguing and heartfelt story that leads right into the third book (Messenger). If you enjoyed The Giver, definitely don't miss out on the rest of the series.
Many years ago I had the pleasure of reading "The Giver" by Lois Lowery. It was complete unto itself, a fascinating story of a time without technology, an anti-utopian future time. I never forgot the story and was thrilled when the movie came out which reacquainted me with the book. Recently I discovered Lois Lowery had gone on to write 3 more books, calling it a Quartet, not a series. I bought the second book, "Gathering Blue" and quickly became, once again, enthralled by the writing of Lois Lowery. This story takes place in a poor village and is the story of Kira, a young crippled girl with an extraordinary gift for weaving. It is a beautifully written piece. I was totally captivated by all of the characters as well as the clarity of story line, staying true to all the details of a world without technology, how the people thought and lived. The characters are separate from those of "The Giver", but there is still the theme of not everyone being willing to follow the norm, the original thinkers. As with the first book, there are loose threads, there are questions. That is where the reader gets to use his or her imagination to decide what might have happened next or leave the book as it is, a unique glimpse into a possible future time, and be satisfied. I, myself, love the what ifs which will keep me occupied for a long time to come. In the meantime, I downloaded the rest of the quartet. I am in no way hoping to connect the dots to turn these stories into a series. I look forward to more thoroughly enjoyable and thought provoking reading. Thank you Lois Lowery.
After reading The Giver and loving it I went to see the movie, which was such a powerful film!!! I was definitely riding a high from this book and was eager to continue the series. Before I started reading The Gathering Blue I learned that it did not however, follow Jonas, nor was it based on his community that he lived in. So, I approached this story, saddened, but with the knowledge and understanding that it was to be a completely different story.
There were some things that I did like about The Gathering Blue, but overall I thought the story was very slow, and it took a long time for things to happen, or events to unfold in this story v.s. The Giver.
I did like that this story took place I guess you would say in the same "world" as The Giver, but in a different community with its own set of unique rules.
For those of you wondering if you should read The Gathering Blue to continue the series my answer is still yes, while this book is harder to get through, I can see where certain characters will play an important role in the books to come. I have already started book three in the series , The Messenger, and some of the secondary characters from The Gathering Blue are now Main characters in The Messenger. I am not far in the book right now, but I can confirm that Jonas and Gabe both make an appearance.
