The One and Only Ivan |
Winner of the Newbery Medal and a #1 New York Times bestseller!
This unforgettable novel from renowned author Katherine Applegate celebrates the transformative power of unexpected friendship. Inspired by the true story of a captive gorilla known as Ivan, this illustrated book is told from the point of view of Ivan himself. This paperback edition includes an author's note highlighting the differences between the fictional story and true events, a version of the author's Newbery Medal acceptance speech, Ivan's "signature," discussion questions, and more.
Having spent twenty-seven years behind the glass walls of his enclosure in a shopping mall, Ivan has grown accustomed to humans watching him. He hardly ever thinks about his life in the jungle. Instead, Ivan occupies himself with television, his friends Stella and Bob, and painting. But when he meets Ruby, a baby elephant taken from the wild, he is forced to see their home, and his art, through new eyes.
In the tradition of timeless stories like Charlotte's Web and Stuart Little, Katherine Applegate blends humor and poignancy to create an unforgettable story of friendship, art, and hope.
The One and Only Ivan features first-person narrative; author's use of literary devices (personification, imagery); and story elements (plot, character development, perspective).

Katherine Applegate's many books include the Roscoe Riley Rules chapter book series, the picture book The Buffalo Storm, and the award-winning novel Home of the Brave. With her husband, Michael Grant, she wrote the hugely popular series Animorphs, which has sold more than 35 million copies worldwide.
Katherine was inspired to write The One and Only Ivan after reading about the true story of a captive gorilla known as Ivan, the Shopping Mall Gorilla. The real Ivan lived alone in a tiny cage for twenty-seven years at a shopping mall before being moved to Zoo Atlanta after a public outcry. He was a beloved celebrity at the zoo, which houses the nation's largest collection of western lowland gorillas. Ivan was well known for his paintings, which he "signed" with a thumbprint.
Katherine lives in California with her husband and two children.

还没看,不知道内容怎么样。装帧还是不错的,国外的书品质就是好
超好的书,也很精致。
First, my daughter is a reluctant reader. I am not sure she has ever completely read a novel from front to back in her life. She was required to read a book for a book report in school. I told her to read 50 pages each day; on the second day, she came out of her room after an hour to get a drink and said, "Mom, this book is great! I am on page 150!" After another hour, she came out with a huge smile on her face and said it was the best story she has ever read! As an avid reader myself, I have never understood why she hates to read. Now I know she has just never read the RIGHT book to get her hooked!
In addition, I am a 5th grade teacher. In my school, we have daily Book Clubs. I have been reading The One and Only Ivan with my students for 3 years and their reactions are exactly like my daughter's. Katherine Applegate is an amazing author! I love how Ivan, the gorilla, is the narrator; this gives the reader a great inside look into his thoughts and feelings. You easily fall in love with each of the characters and build compassion for each one. I highly recommend this book for any elementary student!
Oh, what a wonderful book! I've spent all summer reading books that were *highly* recommended, only to be absolutely disappointed. This book, however, does NOT disappoint! It is absolutely beautiful. It's a very quick, easy read, but has quite a lot of depth and meaning, along with gorgeous imagery and subtle humor. I began reading it late one night, when I planned on only reading for about 15 minutes, but ended up reading the entire book that same night. I simply couldn't put it down!
It has a couple of very sad moments to which I would not want to expose my preschooler, but I am so excited about using it as a read-aloud for my slightly older child.
PLEASE do yourself a favor and read this book! If there is only ONE book you read this year, make it this one :)
This book won the Newbery Medal for Children's Literature in 2013, and it was much deserved. Here's what the book has going for it:
1. The Targeted age of the reader: In recent years people have complained that the Newbery Medal was being awarded to books that were for an older demographic, like older teenagers. I'm not sure I agree with that, because when you read the earlier Newbery Medal books you can tell by the vocabulary and subject matter that the intent has always been for these books to enrich the young reader regardless of age. With that said, Ivan is a book that has a slightly younger age group in mind. Which is important as it will introduce the young reader to great stories spurring them on to try to read more Newbery Medal books.
2. The story is based on a true story. Ivan was real! The main parts of the story are true. This would be a great school book for a young, say 5th grade, class to read, and then research the true story. A simple Google search will turn up all kinds of information about the real Ivan, pictures and all. In turn this information could be used in projects and presentations.
3. I love the characters! I truly enjoyed getting to know every character presented in the story. From the animals to the humans, each one has a great personality that I really enjoyed. My two favorite characters were the young girl, Julia and the dog, Bob. The author could easily write more books about Ivan, and Julia and Bob.
4. The illustrations are nice, and very contemporary.
What I didn't Like:
1. The book is separated out, but not into chapters. I wish she had done that.
I really felt a "Charlotte's Web" vibe to this book. The plot and characters have some similarities that just made the book overall enjoyable to read.
I recently heard that Disney has bought the movie rights to this story, and I hope that's correct. It would make a great movie!
This book is to sad for kids. Plus the gorilla just moves from a circus to a zoo. The kids had a hard time understanding why one cage was ok and one was not. Indeed the author seems to struggle with the same issue and admits in the book that the gorilla just moves from one cage to another- So I did not really get the point. Made me feel sad for all caged animals and we live in SD and visit the zoo often. Just made me want to cry.
