Came promptly and was exactly as described, no horrible bumps or dents and the slip for the hard cover is in perfect condition
This series has gotten darker, but then, in a series about a boy that fights witches and other creatures, what do you expect.
First, hats off to Mr Delaney. He is doing one thing correct, and that is that he creates a complete story within his set of given pages. There is finality when you read the last page, with a glimmer of the future beyond. The future is not bright and cheery, but it is a future for Tom, and one that I want to follow.
Alice has been there throughout, and is proving to be a companion through and through as well.
And, then there is the spook. He is still very much the grumpy old man, but his moments do soften him a bit.
Tom is growing, and everything that he has learned is used, and he continues to grow, and the reader along with him. This is a wonderful series and very much what I would compare to Harry Potter, if he were a witch hunter instead of a wizard.
The third book of the series continues the dangerous adventures of Tom, the Spook & Alice. The story introduces the Spooks current & long time love interest (although not by any means the only flame from his past) who turns out to have stolen his heart as the big love of his life. There is also something dark & dangerous about his honeybun (which is ironic, because the Spook always warns Tom About becoming too close to Alice!) and did I mention her scarey feral sister? A wild ride storyline that nearly sees the end of Spook ~ unless Tom risks his life and has the resourcefulness to save him. Also, an altercation with a rogue stone-chucker boggart, a death in Tom's family, and the almost near destruction of the county by never ending winter, caused by a meddling past failed apprentice of the Spooks (unless Tom can keep his cool) ... so, no pressure on the still wet behind the ears apprentice or anything! The third installment of the Wardstone Chronicles, one of my most favorite series, will not disappoint. Joseph Delaney is a masterful story teller, skillfully weaving tales based upon old English folklore with a great big helping of his own ingenious narrative twists. Don't read at night if you must get up early, because you won't be able to stop reading!
The Spook's Secret is the third part of a story told by Thomas Ward, who as a youngster is apprenticed to a Spook, a somewhat elder man, who fights all kind of demons ("boggarts"), witches and ghosts. The protagonists are already given but also important is Alice, a young witchmaiden, who counterbalances the dreadfull adventures in the dark and the mother ("Mam") of Tom who plays a role, being not only human. The story is full of emotions, a good cast, characters an creatures alike, and although fiction for most of its part credible. In a way this is trilogy, it helps to read the first two books (Spook's Apprentice and Spook's Curse) to understand the last one, because the main persons are there and in each book they are followed up to their gradution, discovering something new from them of something old. Anyway, I looked forward to the third part, having enjoyed the other two tremendously. I am certainly no kid anymore but not in the least ashamed to admit that I am a true fan. Joseph Delaney knows who to tell an old fashioned tale and to weave a plausible plot. Good reading, especially after nighttime. Have fun, when Harry Potter is nowhere in sight.
