很可爱愉快的书,想起童年
the content of the book is good, but the words is too small to read.
I wish I could be a Swallow or an Amazon. It was great fun to read about the adventures these kids came up with and their idyllic lifestyle. This is also an interesting (if fictional) view of hands-off parenting: the mother gladly sends her children on their independent adventure to an island with just a few guidelines about touching base infrequently.
This book's greatest strength and weakness is that it lacked serious conflict and did not suck me in. I was able to put the book down...and I found that pleasant for a change, since I normally gulp in one sitting. I read some, put it down for a few days, went back and read some more. I wish that today's literature had not built up a desire in me and in so many others to have serious, high conflict. I'm glad the kids were never in grave danger or trying to save the world. They had adventures, but I was never terrified for their lives and just enjoyed their good-natured battles and explorations.
If you're not familiar with the author Arthur Ransome, just Google his name to see how big his fan group is.
These books (Swallows and Amazons is the first in the series) were written about 80 years ago and the stories are still wonderful. I started reading the S&A books back in the mid-1960's when I was still in grade school. My mom had read them as a young girl and she got me started. I now own all 12 of the books in the series and I re-read them every couple years. Even though I know all the plot lines, Ransome tells such great stories that I always enjoy them as much as the first time I read them about 50 years ago. They're perfect for adventure lovers of any age!! Although you don't HAVE to read the books in order in order, it's better if you do as the author develops the existing characters and introduces new ones as he goes along so you get to know them. Swallowdale is the second in the series after Swallows and Amazons.
I wasn't at all sure how this book, a favorite from my childhood, would stand up for modern readers, like my daughter. We read this together as her bedtime story, and she absolutely loved it. So much so that we will be reading others in the series as bedtime stories in the not too distant future.
The book is, however, representative of the time in which it was written, which some modern readers may not be comfortable with. For example, the female characters are - for the most part - expected to take care of the traditional female responsibilities. One example I found especially jarring was where Susan tended to the camp fire and prepared food for everyone to eat while John got to spend some time just wondering around the island doing whatever he wanted. At the same time, my daughter did appreciate that the female characters did get to do more. I suspect she secretly wishes she was Titty, or one of the Amazons. The setting also provided an opportunity for us to discuss the apparent imbalance and compare it to what happens in our own household where chores are more evenly distributed.
Overall, I enjoyed the book thoroughly almost as much as I did when I first read it nearly thirty years ago. I would have only given it four stars, but my daughter insisted it deserved the full 5 and she would be very upset with me if I didn't give it the maximum possible score.
Over the years there have been many reviews written about this series by persons far more adept than me at literary criticism. I won't try to infringe on what has already been done so well. The story and its many sequels concern some adventurous kids having a grand time in the Lake District of England with little adult interference. As an adult, I read this book and all its sequels to my daughters, a chapter or two each night, until we had exhausted the list. After a while, we started all over again. I always selected books that contain good writing, as does this series, with the result that my kids benefitted in terms of their language comprehension and, later, their ability to use language expressively and accurately. Many of the main characters in the books are girls, and the series demonstrates that girls are equally capable with boys at having adventures, misadventures, and the resourcefulness to get out of harrowing situations. I have started my young nieces off on the adventure by buying this book for them with the hope that it will inspire them as it did my kids. There is plenty here for the boys, too; just as there was when I was a lad.
