Young Pele: Soccer's First Star |
HOW DID A POOR BOY named Edson—who kicked rocks down roads and dribbled balls made from rags—go on to become Pelé, the greatest soccer player of all time? While other kids memorized letters, Edson memorized the scores of soccer matches. And when Edson finally played in a youth soccer tournament in the town of Bauru, Brazil, he focused on only one thing from the moment the whistle blew: the goal.
Here is the picture book biography of the boy who overcame tremendous odds to become the world champion soccer star Pelé.

good book. Too challenging for my 2nd grader to read himself but I read it to I'm and he loved it
Great book!
Lesa Cline-Ransome and James E. Ransome's YOUNG PELE: SOCCER'S FIRST STAR tells of a poor Brazilian boy who kicks rocks down roads and dribbles balls made from rags - and who goes on to become the greatest soccer player of all time. His skills and the evolution of his talents make for engrossing reading for kids in grades 2-4.
This book is an investment in beauty. The pictures in it are just gorgeous. It was a Christmas gift for a friend's son for Christmas, and both she and I were just wowed by the beautiful paintings. It's heavier on beauty than on content, but it's in its own cataory. Lovely. I would hope that this thin volumn is one any child would save as a momento.
I love this book! My 4 year old son is a fan of Pele and while he cannot read this on his own, we enjoyed reading this book together from start to finish. I was also impressed by the illustrations. Very nicely done.
