These are a great little series of books -- the Classic Starts - and I'm using them as part of our homeschool curriculum. The kids read two chapters a week...the writing has been updated to be more readable for the 9-up age kids. Each child has to read a whole chapter so that we can work with voice inflection, pauses, etc. as well as reading "the words that are there" rather than the words they "think" should be there.

I'm happy with books; the stories are classics; the abridged version is well done and the writing style is very good! The kids are going to enjoy them a lot!

These remind me of the Classics Illustrated Comics that were popular many decades ago except without all the pictures. I suppose my 5 star rating has nothing to do with these editions, it has everything to do with the stories being retold in this series. We purchased a bunch of them and are enjoying the stories. Make no mistake, this is not classic literature, it is the retelling of the classic stories, paraphrased for young readers.

Please enjoy these for what they are then, an introduction to ageless tales from the brilliant minds of great authors. If your young readers enjoy these stories, encourage them to read the real novels. In that way, the young reader will progress from a mere familiarity with the characters in these abbreviated stories and hopefully come to love the expressive skill of the authors who created them.

I have purchased several books from this series, Classic Starts, for my 9 year old and they are perfect. The story is not "dummied" down, but it is a much easier read and the story remains intact. If you have any young readers interested in the classics this is a great way for them to go.

This series perhaps benefits youngsters with reading difficulties - but we found that the writing is far beneath the age level indicated.
