The Wide-Mouthed Frog: A POP-UP BOOK

From the Okefenokee Swamp comes a frog with a wide mouth that he just loves to use. He's particularly interested in the eating habits of other creatures found in the great outdoors--that is, of course, until he comes upon a big green one with lots of teeth who finds wide-mouthed frogs simply delicious. Full color.

Great book, I really like the pop ups on the animals, but it wasn't much of a story. Overall a good purchase.

As far as pop up books go, this was a bit of a disappointment. I respect the praise this book has received and the legacy it has carved out for itself, bu there's really not much to it. It's very short, only has a handful of colors, and there's barely any "popping up" involved. Each page is dedicated to an animal the frog is talking to, and the only things that stick off the page are the nose/mouth of said animal. The only redeeming qualities are the fact you can sort of make the animals "talk" by slightly opening/closing the page they're on, and of course the well received last two pages (SPOILER: the alligator, one of the bigger pop ups, tries to eat the frog, who the jumps in a pond, revealing a huge SPLASH pop up on the last page). This is fun for smaller children, but if your child is REALLY into books/stories, look to higher quality items.

What kid doesn't love a pop up book. My 2 year old little girl is obsessed with this one. The pop ups are big especially the end. It's a cute story and I love how it teaches her what different animals eat. She tells me "Momma mice eat berries, birds eat worms."

I had to bring in my child's favorite book for a book exchange. I knew immediately this is the book I would bring. The mom who got it has a four year old daughter who also loved it. So I would say this book crosses genders and has a wide age appeal. it's funny and always gives my kids a laugh especially if you do different voices for the animals and squish your lips up at the end.

It's not a long book but not a good bedtime story book in my opinion. My two year old doesn't find it scary. She has pets who eat live food. She already knows some animals eat other animals including humans. She just gets giggly and riled up a little when we read it which is why I don't think it makes a good bedtime story.

I gave my daughter an old princess pop-up book with elaborate pop-ups (castles over 6" tall, multiple flaps, etc.) She absolutely loved it and asked for more pop-up books. I purchased this and one other (Pop-Up Dinosaurs) in hopes of keeping her interest.
The book is short, only a few pages. The pop-ups aren't very elaborate or large.
Yes, it's a pop-up book. Unfortunately it's not quite elaborate as the princess pop-up book from 20 years ago...

Our 16 month old loves this book. It's been a bedtime favorite for many months now, but I suspect his preference has little to do with the sparse story or the cool (and somewhat creepy) pop up pictures, and everything to do with the dramatic (and also somewhat creepy) voices his daddy uses for each character. This gets our vote as a quick and fun read that doesn't feel burdensome when your toddler asks for it for the bazillionth time.
