"Visually, Roller Girl is very appealing — think Lynn Johnston with a modern edge — but it's the storytelling that really sets this graphic novel apart…A great choice for tween girls, whether they're remaking themselves, renegotiating friendships or just weathering the stormy seas of early adolescence." —Chicago Tribune

I have a daughter who I expect will have different issues with her changing perspectives, feelings, and place in the world. She is strong and smart, and I want her to know that she will be able to do whatever she wants, no matter if that is ballet or roller derby.
On a side note, this graphic novel is broken up into easy-to-read chapters and has a story line that is A) ORIGINAL, and B) WELL-WRITTEN. There are moments where you have to reconsider your own ideas and you want the character to make different moves, but that is the GOOD part about it. Allowing a protagonist to make mistakes is part of realism that is necessary for a person to relate.
It is also really important that she did not instantly go from novice to expert, and that all her hard work did not culminate in her exactly dream fulfillment. She had to be committed and focused, and managed to get better. That is all for which anyone might ask.
I just wanted there to be more than one book. What happens to Astrid after these events? If the book is still called "Roller Girl" then she must stick with roller derby, but what does she do.
My daughter and I, both love this book! It's visually fun, and the story empowering. She has suggested it to her entire 5th Grade, the teaches loved it also so much they will be doing some fundraising to obtain a set of 30 for the campus!
I borrowed this graphic novel from our local library for my oldest daughter who is nine years old. I had wanted to purchase it first but didn't know if she would like it. She ended up reading it in one seating and loving it. The book is intended for kids just a few years older than her but she was able to read it and understand it. She read it multiple times. We ended up buying her roller skates it made her so excited to try. In turn she asked if we could buy her this book. I couldn't say no. I read it as well and liked the message the author had in regards to growing up and friendships sometimes ending and changing. It's something a young adult could relate to.
