Paul B. Janeczko is the anthologist of almost fifty collections, including the award-winning A Poke in the I, A Kick in the Head, and A Foot in the Mouth, all illustrated by Chris Raschka. He is also the author of Requiem: Poems of the Terezín Ghetto and Worlds Afire, a collection of poems about the 1944 circus fire in Hartford. Paul B. Janeczko lives in Hebron, Maine.
Melissa Sweet has illustrated nearly one hundred books for children, including A River of Words: The Story of William Carlos Williams, a 2009 Caldecott Honor Book. She is also the creator of Balloons Over Broadway: The True Story of the Puppeteer of Macy’s Parade, a 2012 Robert F. Sibert Medal Winner. Melissa Sweet lives in Rockport, Maine.

This is a beautiful book of poetry for children. I taught kindergarten for many years and read a different poem each day to the children. I wish I had had this book when I was teaching. The poems are from a broader spectrum of poets than you usually find in children's books. It was fun to find poems by Jim Harrison and Ted Kooser. The illustrations are superb. They're colorful and imaginative.
I bought this for my granddaughter and liked it so much that I bought a copy for myself.
Very well done with both the poetry chosen and artwork. My one criticism is that I stumbled upon the full length Firefly July poem online (there's only one additional short verse) and wish it could have been added, especially since that poem's title named the whole compilation. It makes me wonder now what's missing from the other poems. Finding out, though, will be a great learning experience for me.
I have purchased six of these lovely anthologies and plan to purchase more. I have given them to grandchildren and to friends celebrating births of children. Fine illustrations. Wonderful poems. I have kept a copy for myself and used it with a creative writing class for middle schoolers.
I keep this on my kitchen table (there are always books on my kitchen table) & just page through it or return to favorite poems every now & again. I've had it almost a year. It brightens my days. So it's not just for kids.
A small pocket full of short, strong and wonderful poems. Solid.
