Pax |
A moving story of the extraordinary friendship between a boy and his fox, and their epic journey to be reunited. Beautifully illustrated by multi-award winner, Jon Klassen.
Pax was only a kit when his family was killed and he was rescued by ‘his boy’, Peter. Now the country is at war and when his father enlists, Peter has no choice but to move in with his grandfather. Far worse than leaving home is the fact that he has to leave Pax behind. But before Peter spends even one night under his grandfather’s roof he sneaks out into the night, determined to find his beloved friend. This is the story of Peter, Pax, and their journeys back to each other as war rampages throughout the country.
A profound and moving story with stunning illustrations by award-winning illustrator, Jon Klassen, ‘Pax’ is destined to become a classic in the vein of ‘Charlotte’s Web’ and ‘Watership Down’.

I'm an almost 60 year old man. My wife bought this book from because I love foxes. It's a beautifully written story. Have a box of tissues nearby. It has a proper ending. I won't say anything else about the story other than I enjoyed the journey immensely.
A truly beautiful book however I think kids should be over 10 prior to reading it. It's message is powerful and at times very unsettling. I loved it and am wildly thinking of people I can buy it for (both adults and chikdren)
Bought it for my 10 yr old. Both me and my son loved the book a lot. Fantastic narration about relationships, courage, kindness. I loved the interaction between Vola and Peter. The characters inspired each other. And Pax was awesome too.. I had great time explaining some great literature like "Two but not Two" to my son. My son picked this as his school reading project and made a gift and greeting card for Peter to cheer him up!!
We love the book. After hearing an interview on NPR, I purchased the book for my granddaughter, but I was interested and wanted to read it too. Great book, I loved it. Then my wife read it; loved it. My daughter has been reading with my granddaughter. She is enthusiastic about it as well. The author Sara Pennypacker has some important lessons to share, teach, preach, about concepts as big as the true cost of war, acceptance, and non-duality, but she does it elegantly in this story that children will enjoy. I love the fact that she never dumbed it down for the age group she was targeting. I think maybe she expects young readers to just enjoy the story and move on, even when they don't quite understand something, knowing they will revisit the concepts in their memories of the book, or maybe in later readings of it. An example would be her conceptual devices to show the foxes communicating and developing thoughts about the humans and the human's deceit and the human's war, but then she doesn't pander in explanation of it, she just lets us soak in those ideas and work them out for ourselves. Reading to my granddaughter, I have tried to follow Sara's lead and only offer the answers and explanations on words or ideas that my granddaughter demanded, and even then, leave it as simple and straightforward as I could. Great book. I've purchased 2 copies now and will probably buy more as gifts to all my young friends and relatives.
