Has nothing to do with adaptive leadership as it was first introduced by Ronald Heifetz or as part of complexity leadership. It is a hodgepodge of good things to have in a leader. With 24 different recommendations, it becomes kinda leadership, all things to all people. Not very usefull in that respect.
The authors fails to understand adult constructive development, For example, they say X needs to be more emotionally intelligent, agile, or take more risk in order to be a good leader. However, they do not say how one can become any of these things, Or that people do not become any of these things over night or when they are young. Emotional intelligence or being one's own person, do not generally develop before age 25 and can take many years to develop. They also, do not acknowledge organizational forces that contribute to negative behaviors. They assume that the person lacking the skills exists in a vacuum.
This book does not give any real, solid advice. There is a short paragraph for each strategy that is not really helpful in putting any action in place.
Do not buy the electronic version as there is reference to page numbers, which have not been adapted in kindle.
This is pretty decent. If you have put your time in as a leader and a manager this book will resonate much of what you already know and bring about some ideas you may have forgotten. For those new to the business world...get it.
I liked the style of this book, part survey and part therapy. I enjoyed the results of the online survey and going back through the book to get a feeling of what the categories were all about was quite valuable. I enjoyed the format of showing (I assume) hypothetical students and what their employees said about them. The employees gave candid feedback about the managers who had the personalities that described the many strengths. All in all, for $!0 on the kindle, this was well worth the time.
Was not helpful, or helpful. It's more of the same you hear or read everywhere. However for those never exposed to this type of training it's going to be a good start. In reality you will have to find your strengths as a leader and use them wisely. A balanced leader as described in this book requires a deep knowledge of one self and lots of practice. If you don't have that ability to see you and others then you might struggle no matter how many books you read.
