Twilight of the U-Boats

In essence, this is the story of U-223,commanded by Karl-Jrgen Wehter from the time of her commissioning in Kiel in January 1943 through a murderous career to her eventual but dramatic demise in the Mediterranean in March 1944. At the same time, the book covers the declining fortunes of the U-boat arm as a whole from early 1943 when it seemed invincible and seriously threatened the Allies with defeat to the end of the war.

This book is another Uboat book, but its like most others on the subject, it starts OK, but then goes into each convoy sinkings, fine but after most of the book one gets bored of "getting position, firing, the sinking of the ships then naming them," I realise this is the book but, each convoy attacked is treated in the same way and no finite details are given, its impossible each attack is very similar.
The book also try's to give a story of a particular boat but again it glosses over the details, I am afraid I was disapointed , but it is in my library along with others on the subject and I will read it regularly.

Others have reviewed this book as a waste of time. However, it seems that the reviewers were looking for U-boat action and stories of the officers and men in their wartime actions. Conversely, I saw the book as a detailed report of the losing battle of the German U-boat fleet as it was slowly overcome by the steadily growing capability of the Allied naval and air force's. A detailed report that would satisfy WW II Atlantic buffs.

Enjoyed this book with lots of information about the WW II U-boat battles. It is amazing how many U-boats went forth and how changing technology, code breaking, and tactics altered the battle from one of massive U-boat victories to one of ultimate defeat. A very interesting read of submarine and anti submarine warfare and the brave souls above and below the sea.

From the first shot fired by Nazi U boats to their final humiliation in 1945 Edwards takes the reader through Admiral Donetz boats years long effort to cut Great Britton's life line with America. The struggle between the vessels attempting to beat the U boats was a cruel and brutal affair and that is conveyed in spades by author Edwards.

An excellent book for the history of the rise and fall of the U'Boat War. I liked the facts given as to number of boats involved in a particular action, the Allied reaction to the subs as time went on, and the true stories of some of the men involved. Interesting reading; good resource book.
