This is a very high quality book, chock a block full of information about construction sites, with lots of imaginative flaps, things that swivel, move, and fold. HOWEVER...it is not as good as "The Ultimate Book of Vehicles" by the same author. The "Vehicles" book is more appropriate for kids 3 years and up: It is still full of awesome flaps, swivels, and things that move, but it is simpler, with pictures of the vehicle, the name of the vehicle, and maybe a few names of the parts of the vehicle. You open up a flap to see inside, make it move, etc. My son found it very interesting.
The "Construction" is really aimed for older kids, I'm guessing 5 and up, maybe even older. There are just so many words on the page, and so much information. The flaps are not as interesting as the previous book, and I found many of the moving parts to be "sticky", and my 3 year old ripped quite a few out within a week of reading the book. We have not ripped anything from the "Vehicle" book.
So I would say if you have an older kid who wants to gain a lot of knowledge about construction sites, this book is for you. But if you have a younger child (3 and up, any younger and they'd destroy the book), get the "Vehicle" book.
My son LOVES.....LOVES......is OBSESSED with construction vehicles. I had high hopes for this book and although my son is THRILLED with it, I'm giving it 4 stars because of the way it is laid out. The concept is great. They go through how they build a building, road, boat, bridge, roller coaster, crane, subway, and airplane. The problem is that it's not quite a book you can "read" to your kid. It's not in paragraph form. There are captions everywhere indicating the steps of the construction, but I struggle with the order I'm supposed to read them. Sure, most of it I can figure out, but I had to tell my son to hold on while I looked it over first. It's not like it goes from top to bottom or left to right. The ONLY page that was easy was the building a road page because they laid out the 3 layers of the road (dirt, gravel, asphalt) and went from bottom to the top of the page. It's still great for kids who love construction vehicles. Just be aware that it will be easy for kids to destroy. Make sure they are gentle enough with lift the flap style books before giving this to them.
I'm a civil engineer that builds subways for a living. This is the best children's book about construction that I have ever seen. My daughter loves the activity involved with reading this book. Each page is unique, with different combinations of flaps, pull tabs, and levers... and one page even has a twirling cutter head of an earth pressure balance tunnel boring machine. We both love this book!!!
2.5-year-old loves it but has already ripped off a few of the pieces. extra supervision required, and no "story" or words to read (which can be a positive in that you have a different experience with the book each time, but if your son insists you "read" it at bedtime, it can be challenging). overall, great variety of vehicles actually from different parts of the world and beautifully put together.
This is a great book and my 3-year-old loves it. Some of the flaps/motion pieces are a little hard for young hands to manipulate without breaking/ripping, so adult supervision may be necessary. Beware that the print is very small, so it may be a hard book for parents to read at bedtime when either tired or with low-lighting (I have to tell my son that mommy is too tired to read this as a bedtime book).
