Walter the Lazy Mouse (Nancy Pearl's Book Crush Rediscoveries) (English Edition) |
The classic tale by award-winning author Marjorie Flack is back in print for the first time in decades!
Walter is a lazy mouse. He is so lazy that he always misses school and spends all his time in bed. He is so lazy that eventually his family forgets about him and moves away…without him. Alone and scared, Walter heads out into the world to search for his family. He travels through a dark forest and soon meets a turtle and some frogs. Walter decides to create a new home on Mouse Island. His froggy friends live nearby, and Walter tries to teach them things. With his own island—and friends who depend on him—Walter must learn to take care of himself. There is no time to be lazy! But will Walter ever see his family again? First published in 1937 and back in print for the first time in decades with Marjorie Flack’s own illustrations, this is a classic tale of adventure and friendship, and the importance of perseverance. An introduction from noted librarian Nancy Pearl is included.

One of those titles I came across when browsing the Kindle store. I'm a sucker for an animal story (a guilty reading pleasure of mine), so I instantly purchased it.
What a sweet story. Each character is fun and memorable and I wanted to be friends with all of them. However, I did feel kind of bad for Walter when his new frog friends didn't remember him when he was gone for a while, and also when he returned to his school and his family and no one seemed to miss him or notice he was gone all that much. I mean, didn't anyone bother to LOOK for him?
Overall, a cute little animal story that, despite its age (written in 1937), would still be enjoyed by children and adults alike. The illustrations were adorable as well.
I liked how the story delivered a lesson, especially the way in which Walter learned to overcome his laziness. The story-telling also is so child like that I imagined a child narrating the story as other children listened. That an adult author managed that so well I found remarkable.
An imaginative story, but parents and teachers need to be prepared to answer how a family, even an imaginary one, could totally forget a family member. While this detail allows young Walter to go on an adventure and be rehabilitated from his laziness, it can be disturbing to sensitive children to think their mother could forget about them. There is a happy ending despite this setup to his journey.
Our 6 year old granddaughter loved this book. When we would finish a chapter, she would ask if we could read the next one. The stories about Walter's adventures were short enough to keep her attention and she was inquisitive as to what would happen next. She didn't realize this little book was teaching nothing is impossible with persistence and hard work.
I read this to my 3 year old at night (1 or 2 chapters) and it has just enough illustrationso to keep him interested in the story. A great introduction into more complex narratives.
