The Top Gear Years |
The Top Gear Years brings together Jeremy Clarkson's collected magazine columns for the first time.
Clarkson at his pithy, provocative, hilarious best
We now know all about the world according to Clarkson. In a series of bestselling books Jeremy has revealed it to be a puzzling, frustrating place where all too often the lunatics seem to be running the asylum. But in The Top Gear Years, we get something rather different. Because ten years ago, at an ex-RAF aerodrome in Surrey, Jeremy and his friends built a world that was rather more to his liking: they called it Top Gear HQ. And Top Gear is for Jeremy what the jungle is for Tarzan: the perfect place to work and play. But they didn't stop there . . .
With this corner of Surrey sorted out, Jeremy and the boys decided to have a crack at the rest of the world. With Top Gear Live charging through with the subtlety of a touring heavy rock band and far flung outposts across the globe from North America to China - an empire of petrol-headed upon which the sun never set.
And all along Jeremy was writing about it in Top Gear magazine. Here, collected for the first time, are the fruits of his labours: the cars, the hijinx, the pleasure and the pain. Brilliantly written and laugh out loud funny.
The Top Gear Years follows Jeremy Clarkson's many bestselling titles including Round the Bend and The World according to Clarkson series.
Praise for Jeremy Clarkson:
'Jeremy Clarkson is very funny and his well-honed political incorrectness is a joy. .' - Daily Telegraph
Jeremy Clarkson began his writing career on the Rotherham Advertiser. Since then he has written for the Sun, the Sunday Times, the Rochdale Observer, the Wolverhampton Express & Star, all of the Associated Kent Newspapers and Lincolnshire Life. Today he is the tallest person working in British television.

When I saw the title of this book I was excited, thinking that Clarkson was finally going to spill the beans on what life has been like making Top Gear for the past ten years. But no. It's merely another collection of his newpaper articles, some of which mention Top Gear, and most that don't. It is notable for the first (that I'm aware of) mention of James May as a presenter for Top Gear (as a replacement for the departing Clarkson in 1999). This could have been SUCH an interesting book if it had been written about Top Gear (as the title would lead one to believe it was), instead of just more car reviews. I've purchased all of Clarkson's other compliations, but I'm done giving him money for merely editing already written material. I won't purchase another one of his books until (unless) he actually writes one that's not already printed in the newspaper.
When I saw that there is a new book of Mr. Clarkson's columns I immediately knew that it is something I want to read. Since I am big fan of TV's Top Gear and of cars in general, I tend to be on the same wave as Mr Clarkson most of the time. While I don't share all of his opinions, I have to say that I enjoy reading about what he has on mind.
This book will take you through 20 years of Mr. Clarkson's columns in Top Gear magazine - 20 years of a clever man who cares about cars, Britain and about everything what happens around him. Don't be afraid that the old columns are out dated - I didn't find even one that wouldn't feel contemporary. One might not agree with all what Mr. Clarkson says but on the other side one has to admit that he has firm opinion on life and is able to write about it in an all absorbing way.
I really enjoyed this book because it gave me few hours of very smart and entertaining reading about things I like.
If you like Clarkson you will love the book. It's his columns and I have to say that I agree with this guy way to often for comfort. He has a great style and isn't afraid to say what other people are thinking but afraid to say. Nothing is off limits....If you are a PC freak then don't read it, if you think for yourself read it and enjoy. I couldn't get enough of top gear (Thank you netflix) I needed more Clarkson and this gave me my fix now on to the next one, and the next one.....Poweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeer!!!!
The book is, like all of the other Clarkson books i've seen, a collection of his columns written during his years on top gear. They are funny and insightful. He has a title page for each year that shows the top 5 songs and movies for that year. Its kind of neat to see what the top 5 were in England compared to here in the US. A great book to read in short stints, as the articles are 2-3 pages.
Entertaining due to Clarkson's ability to write in an entertaining manner. The downside its that most of the articles are quite old and so concern cars that are long gone. If your a fan it won't matter so much. If your after info. You might want to look elsewhere.
