Some pretty amazing things have happened to Avi. It all began in 1970, with "Things That Sometimes Happen, " his first book. His novels include two Newbery Honor Books, "Nothing but the Truth" and "The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle, " also the winner of the "Boston Globe-Horn Book" Award. Avi's fifty books tell mysterious, fantastical, and historical tales, and even an animal tale or two, like "Poppy" (also a "Boston Globe-Horn Book" Award recipient) and "The Christmas Rat." He lives with his family in Denver, Colorado.

This is a brilliant book:
Several reasons:
1. The plot and prose are both good and something that I could imagine a 12 year old boy getting into (I have two sons). There are a number of good aphorisms that are worth noting and can provide a basis for further discussion with your children.
2. There are no, um, romantic scenes and no questions that you would have to answer about those thing that you might not want to.
3. The book is historical, and your son (or daughter) just might learn something from reading this.
4. There are quite a few new vocabulary words for your child to learn to increase their vocabulary. (Doff. Tunic. Kirtle. Solars. Recorder. Daub and Wattle. Yewbow. Porticullis. Caterwauling. Glaive. Tonsure. None/Prime. Sconce)
5. The book puts me in mind of another very good book for children that I've read (A Single Shard) in that the story had a message. (And this is rare when one considers the huge number of books that detail teenage angst at great length with no ultimate conclusions.) The messages were: i. Having a skill is a good way to not be hungry; ii. Being able to read and being familiar with the written word is a great advantage; iii. Being friendly is not always the same thing as being helpful; iv. A man's word is everything. (None of even the most objectionable characters did not keep their word in this book.)
There was one drawback, and that is that the book was very heavily centered around the church (our house is Jewish and not Christian), and that can cause some awkwardness-- but you can't have everything.
Verdict: Highly recommended, even at the new purchase price.
I ordered this book for my grandson. Each night, he and his Dad read the book aloud together. They both enjoyed the book and my grandson's reading skills improved. They just finished the second book and made a project together for a school assignment. My son is a busy attorney, but reading each night with his son has truly been quality time together.
There are so many good reviews here of the story, that I will simply say it's a great book for 13 year olds. It's well written and immerses the reader in many experience and sensations of the 13 year old Crispin on his journey during the 1300s in England. Avi keeps things quite real, not glossy at all. It's truly a journey back in time and I hope that our kids reading it, have a greater appreciation of all the things we all take for granted these days.
Even with it's nice large type on the printed hardcover edition, it was great to have the Kindle edition so I could read along with my son. We had to drive for a few hours and I was so pleased that for $3.49 additional I was able to get him the Whispersync audio to listen to so he could get his book report in on time.
I think Crispin and The Cross of Lead is an awesome book ,Crispin is a well formed character in a great plot. Bear is also a great supportive character towards Crispin and his journey to discover where he really belongs in the world. I think Avi did a wonderful job on research for the time period. Anyone who loves adventure and action but still wants to feel your heart get all warm and fuzzy at the end, I recommend Crispin And The Cross Of Lead.
